My paladin character is at level 4 right now, and what I can gather from the "Class features" I should be able to prepare up to 5 spells + the spells that are always prepared. However I can only switch out 1 besides the 2 that are always prepared. Is there a reason for this?
A paladin (2024) doesn't prepare spells the same way as a cleric or a wizard. You will never be asked to choose your 5 spells to prepare. Instead, you gain and prepare spells when you level up, and then you may only otherwise change out a single prepared spell per long rest. It is a slow process, and same for the Ranger.
A 2024 Paladin should get 5 spells at level 4 to prepare as RegentCorreon, a 2014 paladin should be able to prepare 2+CHA modifier spells at level 4 (minimum 1). Are you using a 2024 or legacy (2014 paladin).
