i have a question on polymorph, if a character turned into, say a giant ape, will they have control over their thoughts. For example my player wants to turn into a giant ape on this boat and start flinging people off. Does that take too much thought power or is that allowed?
Important bit: 'The new form can be any beast whose Challenge rating is equal to or less than the target's (or the target's level, if it doesn't have a Challenge rating). The target's game Statistics, including mental Ability Scores, are replaced by the Statistics of the chosen beast. It retains its Alignment and personality.'
You keep your personality and alignment and such as. You're still "you". But, your mental capacity (i.e. mental stats like Intelligence) still get replaced which might make you less intelligent. So, your ability to think creatively or remember how magic works will be reduced, you cannot solve a puzzle any more than an animal would, but you remain you. You still treat your friends and as friends, know the difference between friend and foe, know your mission and so on.
For example if turn into a cat for spying you will still know you're a polymorphed being out to spy and will know who you are spying on and to remain inconspicuous. Even if you then spot a mouse somewhere, you would still know not to chase the mouse and keep on task. But you may not know how to intelligently react to changes in circumstance - you wouldn't know to go suicidal to break the spell, for instance.
Think of it as becoming a highly trained animal. You can do more as an animal than a normal untrained one - a trained cat will know to ignore a mouse or to spy, but you cannot train a cat to understand how the spell works or to end it by jumping to your death.
