So I want to make sure I’m not helping a friend do something that shouldn’t be possible. I am in a campaign where the Druid in the game is currently constantly picking up to 30 pebbles to hold on him at any given time to constantly keep up Magic Stone on the 30 rocks. We had a fight where there were bandits climbing up a hillside, he had me hold my shield out, dumped the stones into my shield, then we poured them down on the enemies.
Our DM allowed it in this one case, but only allowed all 30 rocks to hit one character. Is this technically allowed? We would be using gravity as the initial force to attack people. Would each Stone have a hit chance to smack into the enemies down the wall? Or should the rocks have just gone tumbling down and not done anything?
Spells officially do only what they say they do. Magic Stone deals the damage listed on the spell if hurled by hand or from a sling. Pouring a bunch of them out on top of someone is neither. If the DM decides to bend the rules and allow dropping enchanted stones, it's up to them how that works.
More importantly, you definitely can't have 30 magic stones with 1 druid since the spell ends early if it's cast again.
Thanks, I didn’t read the spell fully it seems. We are both sort of new and he thought it said they just lasted a minute so he could constantly enchant new stones every 6 seconds.
No worries, it's an easy mistake to make. There's a couple of other spells that don't require concentration but still limit you to 1 instance of it at a time, so be on the lookout for that. Examples include Light, Shillelagh, Produce Flame, Minor Illusion and Spiritual Weapon.
