One of my players recently got a lizardfolk shaman as a companion (long story), who can cast the spell “Summon Animal” (I don’t have access to english books, I assume it’s called that way), but only with reptiles. Now he asked me wether he can summon dragon nestlings, as most have the necessary challenge rating of 2 or lower. The Monster Manual describes them as giant, winged lizards with great magical powers, but they are their own type of monster. Does this qualify them as animals in the sense of this spell?
it looks like the spell you are after is Conjure Animals, which only conjures creatures that are of the type "beast" - note that "reptile" isn't a type classification within the D&D 5e rules, so will have to be a decision made by the DM, whether each beast is a reptile or not (it should be reasonably easy to figure though).
The D&D Beyond monsters database, makes this easy to look through by providing filters to help you find what you're looking for.
