Hey guys weird question one of my players is playing a monk he makes attack rolls with unarmed strikes in the Players handbook equipment it shows unarmed strike as 1d4 but in the monk page it says his unarmed strikes dice damage goes up as he levelsis that his reg attack or only the attacks he makes using Ki.
The martial arts feature of the monk class provides the player the option to use the monk level based damage die (as shown on the monk class chart) in place of the normal damage whenever they hit with an attack using an unarmed strike or a monk weapon (which is defined as short swords and any simple melee weapon that doesn't have the two-handed or heavy tag).
“It is a better world. A place where we are responsible for our actions, where we can be kind to one another because we want to and because it is the right thing to do instead of being frightened into behaving by the threat of divine punishment.” ― Oramis, Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
-You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons.
-You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or monk weapon. This die changes as you gain monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Monk table.
-When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action. For example, if you take the Attack action and attack with a quarter- staff, you can also make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn.
This means that he can attack with either Dex or Str; He can use his monk dmg die in place of the normal unarmed strike or weapon dmg die, and he can use his bonus action to make a/nother unarmed strike (which may use the monk dmg die) if he's properly equipped.
Also, remember, unarmed strikes don't have to just be punches. If the monk finds themselves with their hands full (or tied up), a headbutt, elbow, knee, kick, etc.. can all be used as an unarmed strike. The monk's whole body is a weapon.
