I get that in the abstract, its just that I have trouble imagining wood being more effective than metal, considering it should burn up faster. Metal alone just seems odd to me.

They are humanoids, so not actual fire to burn wood. But they were born in the fountains of creation, which is basically the magical origin of forges, so they are magically immune to metal. The metal doesn't get melted by them.
And forges burn up wood. *shrugs* It just doesn't make sense to me, sorry.
No no. The Lava Child is not fire, nor is it a forge in any way. It is like a human, but born or blessed by the forge such that it is one with metal. It can pass through metal and metal passes through it. This is a magical phase alignment between the Lava Child and metal, not related in any way to fire or temperature. There is no such magical phase alignment with wood so you can hit the Lava Child on the head with a wooden club and it hurts like normal. A steel mace passes right through the head. It's magic, see?
Let your sword rust a little. The rust isn’t a metal so it would analogous to using a silvered weapon. The whole weapon doesn’t have to be silver in order for it to be considered a silver weapon, it just needs a thin coating. Likewise a thin coating of rust would make the weapon a nonmetal weapon.

Let me know if you get your DM to agree.
I would impose a -1 to hit and/or damage to every weapon with rust (similar to those hit by a rust monster).

Lava Child.
Unless that's a typo, I believe that means it's immune to all metal weapons, whether mundane or magical.

That is also my understanding of the abilities of this creature, yes.
Could prove something of a shock for people!

Kind of curious why its not immune to wood weapons as well as metal.
Because they have metal immunity not and not wood immunity. Basically they move through metal as if it isnt there.

It's magic?
They're a hybrid creature drawing powers from both the plane of fire and the plane of earth.
