Does it bother anyone else that this beautiful item requires attunement by a Dwarf and there is no other item similar to it? Let's say there was a Barbarian Goliath who would like this in a Greataxe version. I'd honestly settle for the warhammer if it didn't require that I was a Dwarf. It seems really fun to pretend to be a powerful Thor like creature ^_^
Dwarven Thrower Weapon (warhammer), very rare (requires attunement by a dwarf) You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. It has the thrown property with a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet. When you hit with a ranged attack using this weapon, it deals an extra 1d8 damage or, if the target is a giant, 2d8 damage. Immediately after the attack, the weapon flies back to your hand.
I really don't mind it, actually. I don't mind there being these niches and nooks and crannies in an irregular way... mostly because I feel like it's less interesting to have "every race gets its own thing". Makes the existence of it less to me. I like asymmetry.
We're doing our own book on Kickstarter! It's going to be amazing--300 pages, art, and so much high quality content you'll be drownin' in it... Click here to check it out and sign-up!
Yeah I can see that. The weapon just looks so fun. I almost wish those effects existed and could be applied on any weapon. Then the DMG could allow us to build our own magic items by applying these sweet properties. This all being said, the name Dwarven Thrower does make this item very fitting in name.
That's something that's fairly easy to just homebrew into something more for you. Simply replace the attunement requirement with another race or get rid of it. I would recommend changing the 2d8 if it hits a giant to something more race appropriate or getting rid of it if you allow any race to use it. Make it a greataxe if you want as well. Magic items are one of the easiest things to make small tweaks like this to fit your group or setting.
You could just ask your DM for an Axe of Returning, though as a DM I probably wouldn't be okay with it being a greataxe, as that becomes a little ridiculous (throwing a d12 20/60 feet and having it come back is kind of OP). But a Battleaxe is in line with a Warhammer (both d8 with versatile: d10), so I could see that being ok. Especially if dwarves are naturally friendly with goliaths in your setting and you go to a dwarven smith to have him/her make it for you (perhaps with a quest for goliath specific materials). Or perhaps one such weapon already exists and it's held by a rival tribe (or even better, by the leader of your tribe) and you have to challenge the leader to trial by combat (doesn't have to be to the death, as goliaths are naturally competitive and would relish the idea of a 1v1 battle).

I consider all magic items to be a Start Here and Change What You Want element in my game. The DMG is just a place to get started with ideas and fun. You tinker to make it fit.
Having something else take on the properties of a Dwarven Thrower but the story of my game is wonderful and a delightful surprise for the enterprising player who lustily reads the DMG's magic items list and wishes for things. When they connect the dots to what they have and how it fits the character, story, and sense of fun they'll be happy! Always a great answer to me :)

Or the player that wants to use it searches for a Belt of Dwarven Kind, which allows the use of such items
I thought about that as well.
I'm also a fan of just using the "of returning" qualifier on an item as well. "Greataxe of returning" "Sickle of Returning" "Instant Fortress of Returning"**
** - does not exist in my book yet, but could make for some silly rp in a light-hearted way...

I mean, literally every magical thrown weapon in 4e had the "returning" function, so I don't think it should be that big of a deal to add it onto another magical weapon without increasing the rarity (but certainly putting the cost higher in current rarity's cost threshold)

Not for the barbarian chasing around the flying dragon that keeps staying out of melee...
It's more of the Greataxe problem than the returning property. There's no ranged weapon that does 1d12+ability modifier. Having a Battleaxe of Returning wouldn't be OP and would solve that problem.

Depends on the game, I've homebrewed the equivalent of a compound bow that does a bit more damage with a slightly shorter range, and I have a fighter using Mercer's Gunslinger archetype that will be crafting Bad News (2d12 + dex) or a Musket (1d12 + dex), so yea... not that OP in light of that info
I think it's fine. Thieves can use it no matter what race they are, which is something that makes having them useful. There are similar race restriction items, too.
Still, if you're the one DMing, you don't have to follow those rules if you think they're limiting. If you think a PC in your campaign would make great use of the weapon and see fit to give it to them, give them the item and name it something else. Or keep the name and just remove the race restriction. Maybe give it an extra boost for Dwarves, but let your PC use it or a weakened version of it.
Some people just miss the point. I think that this is a game of make believe and though structure is there to make it fare and fun for everyone, imagination is key. How can the moon blade from Baldurs Gate ever come into existence? Or Aegis-fang from RA Salvatore 's books??? It's your collective groups story if you want it to go from dwarven thrower to Xena's killer frisbee and it fits into the story... I say let it fly ;)
She is a formidable one,” he said when Jarlaxle appeared at his side a moment later. “Dangerous and full of fire,” Jarlaxle agreed. “I might have to kill her.” “I might have to bed her.

Well, I mean if you are home brewing higher damage for everyone, then sure. But that wasn't the context of the original question or any of the responses.
"It's not that powerful, because I've given my players more powerful items" isn't really pertinent to the discussion at hand.

I like to see a Dwarven thrower as blessed by a dwarven god or something...

Good point. I'll talk to my DM lol. We're playing Storm King's Thunder right now and this weapon would be pretty neat on multiple levels.
