So we are going to be having a new DM to our group. And he mentioned this encounter we will be running into when were level one. In the the encounter there are 100 basic kobolds within the fortress he made, and one 17th level sorcerer amoung them that comes out if we manage to defeat all the other kobolds. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to make a good party build of first level characters that can manage to survive this, and even manage to win if it is feasible. And a couple strategy's we can use to defeat it.
Turn around and walk away, from the table. There may be some mechanic your DM is going to allow you that will help turn the tide, some spell, item, machine, something, that will give you a chance at victory. However, I'm more cynical and feel like this is either the DM just trying to attempt something poorly or introducing his pet DMPC.
Cynicism aside: At first level, against those odds, you're dead, there's no other way about it. The kobolds will have pack tactics which will give them advantage on every attack. Even if they're treated like minions from 4e that's 8 attacks with advantage doing an average of 4 damage. You're looking at 32 damage in a round, that'll drop a Barbarian while he's raging. Druids won't fare much better, even Circle of the Moon. That's not even touching on the 8th level spells the caster will have access to which can one shot your entire party.
I have to agree. I see no reason why the DM is telling you about this "really cool" encounter, when there's no way your Character should know anything about the "100 Basic Kobolds" or the 17th level Sorcerer. It really sounds like "look at this awesome thing I can set up and kick your butt with!".
It either is going to be a Dues Ex Machina ending where something totally outside your control saves you ( and that's almost never fun for the Players, because they're not the Heroes, in that case ), or a TPK because the the DM is thinking this is a "DM vs. the Players" kind of game ( and that's almost never fun for the Players ).
I think the Players should tell the DM, "Hey, if you're not going to play fair, we're not going to play".

Well, I suppose, there is oneway you can come out of this battle alive: Surrender before the battle gets into full swing, have the kobolds bring you to the Sorcerer, and then ask the Sorcerer if you can join him. However, that relies on the idea that the DM is willing to allow that type of approach.
That could work, in theory. However, I've never seen ( not even as a Player ), a Party willingly surrender. Players really follow Death Before Dishonor.

100 kobolds and a 17th level sorcerer in a fortress? Just walk away. That fortress is going to be a serious force multiplier for the kobolds. If it is at all well designed and played it is going to have the effect of facing 300-400 kobolds.
If I absolutely, positively, had to confront this threat with a group of first level characters I would start hiring mercenaries. Promise them anything and everything. Let them deal with the threat. The idea of looting the home of a 17th level soccer might appeal to some higher level characters. Just send them in while you go look for something you can actually deal with.

Well, if all the kobolds use Kobold Commoner stats and you only fight a few at a time.....you would still be wiped off the map by the boss.
Just show up with everyone having 20th level characters pre-built like it's obviously what you were supposed to do.
What would y'all say, three magic items each? Seems fair to me.
Fight should be a piece of cake.
