So I have in my campaign, a forest gnome wizard (diviner) and a halfling ranger (gloomstalker). Both are 4th level at the moment but sunday I play to have them very quickly (I hope) level up to 5th level. The gloomstalker has an ability called "Dread Ambusher" (XGTE, P.42). The ability states that that at the start of your first turn of each combat, you get to make an additional attack when talking the attack action. I wanna make sure that I'm reading it correctly that only the first turn of combat, does this apply. He has a +12 ini so if he goes first (which he is likely to do), if he on that turn takes the attack action, he gets his regular attack, and his gloomstalker attack. Correct? Because while I think it's a nice ability. He doesn't get to use this feature in longer combat rounds. And as soon as the first round is over, well **** that extra attack then. And if he doesn't have the ability to attack that round it is also wasted. So I just wanna make sure I'm understanding the feature correctly. ^^
You understand it correctly. It is a very powerful ability, honestly. Most encounters last less than 5 rounds (try counting some time). And the ambush attack deals bonus damage too.
If he cant get close to an enemy on the first turn, hopefully he will try to shoot them instead. Otherwise, he will miss his bonus attack. Gloomstalkers require a bit of positioning before combat starts, they are a bit like rogues that way.

Alright. Thanks. Yeah Gloomstalkers are in my opinion at least, one of the if not the best conclave for rangers. That extra attack thing there is insane. And the invisible thing too. Man! He has an 18 dex, a 16 wis, and the alert feat which gives him a +12 ini. And a level 6 I think he wants to dual class into rogue and go the assassin way. Anyway, thanks for the help man! ^^ Best the loot and luck to you my friend! ^^
Keep in mind he would have 3 attacks not 2 on the 1st round of combat... his regular attack now benefits from the extra attacks ability at 5th level, so he would make 2 attacks a round, and 3 on the 1st round of combat.
Just a few details: he gets the extra attack in the first round regardless of his initiative (if others go before him), but not if he is surprised since he then cannot make any actions the first round.
also note that if he ever gets two levels of fighter, and spend his action surge in the first round he gets yet another attack the first round. For example a fifth level gloomstalker gets 2 regular attacks, plus one in the first round. If he then action surges (from fighter) to get another action, it is still the first round so he gets an additional 3 attacks through that attack action on top for a total of 6 attacks :)
just pointing it our since I play a Gloomstalker/assassin/battlemaster atm.
Dread Ambusher applies to your first turn of combat, not the first turn of an encounter. Another way of thinking about that is: so long as you are able to take an action during the first round of combat (i.e., not surprised, paralyzed, restrained, incapacitated, etc.), you can benefit from Dread Ambusher.
It's a very good feature!

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.

Plus his off hand. His character is built around dual short swords.

That's not wrong, but it is irrelevant. Dread Ambusher does not affect Two-Weapon Fighting in any way.

Yeah. Its his first turn in combat. But thanks! ^^
Hi everyone. Can someone please clarify how many attacks a Gloomstalker5/Fighter2 gets (presumably the same as a Fighter5/Gloomstalker3)? I'm not interested in any off-hand attacks (which constitute a Bonus attack I believe) it is just that I've read that the number is 5 in some places and 6 in others (such as above).
You get 6 ( ignoring possible bonus action). 2 for your Attack Action (including extra attack for lvl 5) and 1 for Dread Ambusher, multiply by two for Action Surge.
You can further increase the amount of attacks by choseing Echo Knight as your Fighter class wich gives another extra attack per Attack Action.
Unleash Incarnation
3rd-level Echo Knight feature
You can heighten your echo’s fury. Whenever you take the Attack action, you can make one additional melee attack from the echo’s position.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

It is that simple. Cheers Bhuraelea.
