Hey, so I'm using a program known as PCGen to create my character that's a sorcerer. I'm aware of the fact that you're able to, when you level up, replace a spell with another, different spell. However, even when I don't want to when I get to level 3, the program says I know 2 first level and 2 second level, as if I was forced to lose a 1st level spell. Is this the case? I doubt it is, but my dad insists that the program is correct, so I'm wondering if that's truly the case.
The Spell Slots available and Spells known don't have to be 1-to-1. You can actually choose to only learn 1st level spells and only have slots available to up-cast spells. I mean, you probably wouldn't want to, but the option is there. So you can learn which ever spells you want to fill out your spells known number, choosing each spell from your class's spell list for which you have spell slots.

The program you are using is probably telling you what is possible, not what is required. In that respect it is correct.
A level 3 sorcerer knows 4 spells at 1st and 2nd level. But it is impossible for it to know 3 level 2 spells.
