I just notice Wizards are not proficient with clubs. Do folks think this is an oversight or intended? I"m thinking oversight as I see using a quaterstaff effective require more training than just a club.

Intended.
Clubs are like a baseball bat. Anyone can swing it but a professional baseball player will swing it better, faster and more accurately (i.e. be proficient).
Remember, everyone can use any weapon - proficiency just means you add a proficiency bonus to attack rolls.

The Wizard and sorcerer weapon proficiencies are the most basic ones that every class has proficiency in. The "simpler" weapons if you will.
