It has been kind of hit or miss on this for me. Some research says top takes a feat away level one and other research doesn't say anything about it. At level one, do we take a freeway as part of character creation or not?
Are there other things that are commonly missed by new players during character creation?
You do not take a feat at character creation of a Level 1 character unless you have a race or background granting this and the only thing that does is Variant Human found in PHB.
After that you may take a fear at certain levels detailed in your class (most typically 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th levels but some classes have additional ones).
It is a common houserule, however, for characters to have a bonus feat to start with - but this is a house-rule.
Feats in general, for 5th edition, are an optional rule at DM's discretion.

I think this point deserves a little extra attention... Feats aren't guaranteed, but vary depending on whether the DM wants to deal with them. Some DMs might even disallow specific feats (I've seen more than one person on this site state that the Lucky Feat isn't allowed at their table).

Usually no, if your DM wants to, they can give the players a feat at level one.
The only race that grants a feat at level one is the Variant Human, and no class gives you one at level one.
D&D is a game for nerds... so I guess I'm one :p
