For various reasons, my character wants a familiar in the form of a crab. I know they're pretty lackluster in terms of abilities, but I want to see what I can do with one. I couldn't find anything online other than the official description.
Does anyone have experience adventuring with a crab familiar?
Also, does anyone have ideas for things you could do to make a crab familiar more interesting or useful?
She's a hermit crab. I'm playing a wizard and have prestidigitation as a cantrip, so I was planning on decorating my familiar's shell differently so she can camouflage with wherever we are. Also, the DM is giving us magic items as a reward for a dragon we just killed. I believe we are allowed to homebrew a magic item if it's reasonable as well. Does anyone have ideas for magical items that could be used by a familiar hermit crab?
They're mostly useful for underwater campaigns. On land, they stick out most of the time and don't move fast enough to avoid getting taken out by nearby beasts unless there is plenty of cover all around...which also means that animals that would eat crabs also have more places to hide. It could be useful if you play in urban political campaigns if you have Beast Sense spell or something similar.

Attach a Driftglobe to its back, and have it light the paths ahead of you.
Or put an Eversmoking Bottle on its back, and have it disorient your foes.
I have a warlock who is crab, I don't think that counts though. Begs the question if that makes the party his familiar's though.

Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.
