Amazing how the Changeling didn't receive the same consideration when WoTC decided what parts of the races of Eberron to change. I don't mind that Unsettling Visage was removed, Doppelgangers don't even have this trait, but the previous version of the Changeling gave the Changeling a Divergent Persona trait allowing them to gain proficiency with one tool of their choice which helps define a unique identity associated with that proficiency; establish the name, race, gender, age, and other details. While they are in the form of this persona, the related proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses that proficiency. The newest version talks about Masks and Personas and how significantly different they are but gives absolutely no beneficial racial feature and trait like Divergent Persona did. Honestly this seems more like whoever was responsible for working on and approving this change just wanted to get the work done quickly and not take the time to do it correctly.
Further more and honestly since the Changeling is descended from Doppelgangers, serious consideration should be given to giving the Changeling the Doppelgangers Read Thoughts feature. This isn't OP and wouldn't break a game. It would be like the Changeling being able to cast Detect Thoughts at will; the features do the exact same thing. You trade off "using your action to either shift your attention to another creature's thoughts or attempt to probe deeper into the same creature's mind" for "while the target is in range, the Changeling can continue reading its thoughts, as long as the Changeling's concentration isn't broken (as if concentrating on a spell). While reading the target's mind, the Changeling has advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Charisma (Deception, Intimidation, and Persuasion) checks against the target." Yes, there is no saving throw and yes the creature doesn't know it's mind is being read.
Here is an excerpt from the Doppelganger description. Stealing Secrets. A doppelganger’s adopted form allows it to blend into almost any group or community, but its transformation doesn’t impart languages, mannerisms, memory, or personality. Doppelgangers often follow or capture creatures they intend to impersonate, studying them and probing their minds for secrets. A doppelganger can read a creature’s surface thoughts, allowing it to glean that creature’s name, desires, and fears, along with a few scattered memories."
Now I know there are a lot of player's and DM's who have their own ideas, opinions thoughts and views on things, but this is specifically directed at the WoTC team who wrote and approved Eberron: Rising From the Last War; Archive or fix the Changeling race, what was done or not done here is lazy and unacceptable.

I feel like all the other races in the eberron are now more appealing than changelings. It still has a niche that makes it interesting but I feel like at least one of the two trimmed traits should be restored, but alas.

To answer your question, yes I am aware that Changelings and Doppelgangers are different creatures. [REDACTED] I'm a retired Army veteran who has been playing Dungeons & Dragons since 1979 and have dice older than most people I encounter. Even though my personal opinion is that all versions after AD&D and before 5th Edition ruined Dungeons & Dragons, one thing that cannot be disputed is the lore. Regardless of what 5th Edition does or does not say about the Changeling race the lore specifically states that Changeling are a race that evolved from the crossing of doppelgangers and humans. [REDACTED] Now you may have to go back to books [REDACTED}, but I promise it will be worth the time and effort to do so.

I have a lot of the older books myself and there are some truly amazing sourcebooks, in terms of D&D lore.
It's worth noting though that lore books from previous editions do not canonically apply to the current version of Dungeons & Dragons. There is a sort of continuity and mostly the lore is carried over and relevant, but it's not to be relied upon.

I asked my question because you seemed to be trying to make the Changelings very close to Doppelgangers, so it was easy to assume that you, like many others, had fallen into the false idea that Changelings were created as a PC version of Doppelgangers. They weren't, and the differences between them were by the deliberate design of the creators. They're not "doppelgangers with a human-like visage" which is very much how your "fixes" are coming across as. They were fully intended to lack the psychic abilities of Doppelgangers and basically be "humans that shapeshift into other people". My question was to provoke the idea that they were intended to be different creatures. [REDACTED]

Yup, Changelings are just boring now, mechanically speaking. Unsettling Visage wasn't exactly OP either. Not that I would be arguing for free Detect Thoughts, but it does feel like they decided to be conservative in handling new "races" again.

Your idea of changeling origins is incorrect in 5e. I explained this in whatever thread you originally made your post in, but in 5e doppelgangers are created from changelings by the Daelkyr. Changelings came first, doppelgangers are aberrant experiments. You’re welcome to change that when you run your own game, but it’s not unreasonable to expect that official game mechanics reflect official game lore.
Choose one of the options below to represent your view of the world.
Passer: You are a Passer, and focus on maintaining a single shapechanged form to better blend into society. Define a unique identity including name, race, gender, age, and other details. You gain proficiency with one tool of your choice related to that identity. While in your favored persona you are supremely confident and once per short rest you may reroll an ability check (after the die is rolled but before you know the result).
Becomer: You are a Becomer and enjoy exploring the breadth of personas you can create. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed and against divination spells. While you are under the effects of a divination spell, if you use your Shapechanger feature, you may choose to immediately end its effect. After you end a spell effect in this way, you can't again until you finish a short of long rest.
Seeker: You are a Seeker and look for hidden truths within your monstrous heritage. You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened. As an action, choose a creature that you can see within 30 feet. You can reveal yourself as that creature's darkest fear. It must succeed at a Wisdom saving throw, DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier or be frightened of you for 1 minute. Only one creature can be affected by this ability at a time and after you attempt to use this ability on a creature, you cannot try again on the same creature until you finish a long rest.
Honestly, free shape changing at will is such a potentially overpowered ability I can see why the Changelings were otherwise fairly underpowered compared to other races. I feel like that's the general tradeoff to expect with "gimmick" races... if you gain access to something the rough equivalent of a leveled spell to use whenever you see fit, I think it stands to reason that you wouldn't get too many other abilities on top of that.

Didn’t you know that almost 50 years ago the gods themselves sent an emissary to deliver unto us plebeians the holy scriptures of what fun should be?!? Those three little books penned by the holy Gygax himself should be considered as scripture forever forward! That sainted man spent all that time going to the toy store, buying little plastic monsters, and inventing rules and description for those made up creature so that he and his friends could play a game. He then had the wisdom and grace to share his ideas with the world so that you could be gifted the privilege of having fun! How dare you suggest altering made up rules for fictional creatures that were set in stone before most current players were even conceived? You’re not allowed to play anymore, turn in your books immediately!” #yourfuniswrong

Bingo. The Divergent Persona feature was cool, and something I'd probably still allow as a DM because the flavor is great, and situational proficiency in a single extra skill isn't game breaking.
BUT, being able to plan ahead and have a shiftweave outfit with easily adjustable straps, buckles, or ties... You can pickpocket someone, duck around a corner, and become another person entirely, down to completely changing your race, voice, and clothing. Incredibly powerful in social situations - not so useful in combat except as a pursuit-escape mechanism.
I see it as they treated the shapeshifting as roughly comparable to Flying which may not be a bad comparison, one is more combat and exploration oriented whereas the other would be primarily for social encounters or avoiding combat in general.

As I asked elsewhere - it seems the main draw of Changelings now is the +3 Charisma they can get.
