From the wording of both, I'd personally say that being killed by an attack from a hellfire weapon prevents the clone spell from working as it should.
The clone spell says:
At any time after the clone matures, if the original creature dies, its soul transfers to the clone, provided that the soul is free and willing to return.
the hellfire weapon prevents this with:
Any humanoid killed by an attack made with this weapon has its soul funneled into the River Styx, where it’s reborn instantly as a lemure devil.
Probably another creature you can kill with it. One that goes back to it's plane when it dies, and can plane shift. Just give it a few whacks with this, and boom, no problem anymore.
This is not only case of things fighting over souls. My personal rule is this chart, lower number wins, contested roll if both are the same number.
Direct Divine Presence and interaction beats anything else
Artifacts
9th level spells
Legendary magic items physically touching the dying body
Any other spell (Soul Cage, Magic Jar) in order of level.
Any other Magic items- like a Ring of Mind Shielding, Hellfire weapon that are touching the dying body: in order of power (Very rare.... down to common)
Magic items not touching the dying body, in order of power.
Racial abilities
Class abilities
Anything else
Using this chart, Clone, being an 8th level spell, should be more powerful than a lowly hellfire weapon, unless it is a Legendary one.
Greetings,
What happens when a spell caster with the clone spell is killed by a hellfire weapon?
Does the clone activate or is the soul reincarnated as a lemure?
Thanks for your answers and I wish everybody a merry Christmas.

I think Stormknight is right. Wow, a level 8 spell thwarted by an uncommon magic weapon that I'm sure was mostly for flavor.
I mean
its a nice cure for a Lich problem

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
Actually, not really. A lich's soul is housed inside its phylactery not its body and cannot go to the outer planes as long as the phylactery exists.
So just
break the thing with it

Also known as CrafterB and DankMemer.
Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.
Not to mention it only works on humanoids

Clone would work, the Hellfire would not.
