Hello. I just had to face some creatures that go to and from the etheral plane. Later I found the spell 'Secret chest'. What I am currious is, if I use it and store explosives in the chest then send it into the etheral plane, would it explode there and the Chest be lost? Or will it explode upon being summoned back to the material plane?
Assuming you primed the explosives before banishing the chest, I would say it explodes in the ethereal plane.
I wouldn't recommend using this as a weapon against ethereal monsters though, since the chest is implied to go to the deep ethereal not border ethereal. Though that would be up to DM.
Wait there is layers to the ethereal plane? and I was thinking like have things inside it tht can exploe and have it with an explosive glyph from the glyphs of warding that is set off to go boom when X happens IE something living is close to it in the etherial plane to go off
Basically the border ethereal is a ghostly version of the material plane. You can see into the material plane and move through it then pop back out in a new location. This is how monsters that vanish into the ethereal usually work. The deep ethereal is the Ethereal Plane proper. It connects to all the inner planes (fey wild, Shadowfell, material, and the 4 elements) and each have their own border ethereal.
Glyph of warding stops working if the glyphs are moved, I think planeshifting counts.
Oh. I missd that part of it. Now as for Plane shifting that might be like how you said earlier up to the DM discission. But thanks for the feedback. and everything.
I think that in Forgotten Realms lore time passes 10x slower on the Ethereal Plane then compared to the Material Plane (or at least, it does in the Deep Ethereal?), but I don't see that mentioned in the 5E creating a multiverse section, so I'd be hesitant to consider that canon for core. And even if time does pass slower on the Ethereal, that only leaves you with a 10x longer fuse before it self destructs in the Ethereal.
As for a proximity-based Glyph of Warding... the description of the Border Ethereal does make it sound like objects on it are oriented spatially with the Material plane, meaning sending a glyph there and back again isn't movement if it's in the same square. Casting glyph at point Material-X, plane shifting to corresponding Border Ethereal-X hasn't moved 10 feet, it's still in the same square (just invisible and incorporeal). Secret Chest is ambiguous about whether the chest has moved when you send it to the Ethereal, but when it returns it absolutely moves if you aren't in the small area, since it reappears within 5 feet of you. This is all getting pretty complicated, but I imagine there probably is some sort of stupid wizard trick you could pull to summon a Secret Chest bomb, as long as you trigger it precisely where you first set it, and don't mind it exploding 5 feet away from you.
Arguably a secret chest in the border ethereal with a proximity trigger also explodes if somebody walks close to it on the material, since they're overlapped and spatially linked, just invisible/intangible to each other. But that sounds really useless, and requires assuming that Secret Chest sends to one kind of Ethereal versus the other? Though I guess that's also true with the paragraph above, the Border Ethereal is the same square as you started on in the Material but is the Deep Ethereal a different place or just a deeper version of the same space? " Distance is meaningless" in the Deep Ethereal so hnnnngggghhhhhh my brain is bleeding >_<

Yeah, the DMG goes into it: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/creating-a-multiverse#EtherealPlane

Phrasing :)

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
