I didn’t realize Light could only be placed on an object. Older versions allowed it to be cast on a point in space.
How would you see Minor Illusion working in the ship example?
I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m doing a thought experiment to see what are the ramifications of having casters able to create something that has a fixed relationship to the ground even if the caster can’t see the ground. I’m not concerned about absurd results but I am interested in useful results.
You've got a good point with Minor Illusion, I think it would end up being totally screwed on a moving boat. If that's an undesirable result, maybe it is a point in favor of allowing spells to have relative placement with their surroundings rather than the "ground." Or, it might be a point in favor of generally just reading "ground" to include "floor" as well, that would accomplish the same thing with possibly less far reach implications for this problem, but would certainly potentially open up some other unintended interactions with Entangle and the like.
