hey I am a new battle smith and wanting to know if my steel defender can attack with a weapon.
The class feature doesn't indicate whether the steel defender can have arms capable of holding a weapon or not, so it's a little ambiguous, but if I were DMing I'd say you probably could build one that would.
That said, it's not proficient with any weapons, so using its built-in attack may be better.

I don't think anything is wrong with a Steel Defender using items. In a dictionary, proficiency is used to describe a skill that took time and consistency to learn. You can give a stick to a 7-year-old and ask him/her to use it as a sword.He/she won't be good, but that does not mean they can't fight, so why not a steel defender? They don't need to be proficient, they just won't hit as often.
1. I have a level 5 rock gnome battle smith artificer. Steel defender on DNDBeyond's character sheet shows different modifiers on different tabs. Actions tabs has one modifier for rend attack, but features and traits has a different number (spell modifier). Which one is correct?
2. What is the best way to digitally roll for steel defender actions for online DnD games?
Hopefully this will get fixed later this year with WotC release of new Eberron book, but I am wondering if I missed anything...
