Is this written somewhere? I know under "Hit Points" in the Artificer class rules, it just gives the math and not any Hit Dice. But in my DDB character sheet, the Homunculus shows "1d4" HP -- which might be a bit of misinformation.
I've seen in other places that pets and servants could be healed by the owner spending their own HD? Maybe I'm just salty that Artificers don't get the Mending cantrip by default.

It's that it's not written. Creatures' hit dice are given in the Hit Points section of their stat block. The homunculus's (actual) stat block does not give it any hit dice. My best guess is that the way D&D Beyond is set up is that monsters require some kind of hit die for tech reasons, so the monster they add to the character sheet has to have something there.

Are you looking at a stat block for the Homonculus that appears in the Monster Manual? Because that one does have hit dice, but it is also a different entity than the one created by the Artificer.

That's what I thought too, but I think they're thinking of [Tooltip Not Found]. The stat block that that links to doesn't exist in the physical book. The Hit Points given in the book is the calculation based on the artificer's stats/level. That's why I suspect there's a technical limitation to how D&D Beyond handles monster pages that requires that they give it some kind of hit die.
Maybe I'm just salty that Artificers don't get the Mending cantrip by default.
Mending is an artificer cantrip. Are you saying you are salty artificer's don't get it without it counting against cantrips known?
Indeed. It feels like a totally appropriate thing to add Mending to the Artificer's spell list by default. It's annoying that if I want to repair my Sidekick, I would need to take Mending and then only get 1 other Cantrip (aside from any racials) until level 10. Although since the official Artificer Homunculus has much less HP, it's a little less useful to Mend them ... But, I digress.
To answer emrfish6 and SagaTympana ... Yes, the stat block for the Homunculus Servant "monster" has 1d4 HD, but also in the DDB Character sheet, when I create a Homunculus Infusion, under Extras the Homunculus shows a "1d4" next to HP. These two reasons are where my confusion comes from.

Every creature that has a statblock on DDB must have a default HD, but that is not the same as being granted a usable Hit Die. It is only a reference point to show how a higher/lower level variant of the creature would be scaled.
The description of the Homunculus Servant infusion, and the specifically listed stat block, are perfectly clear. The Homunculus has HP equal to its Con modifier (+1) + your Int modifier + your Artificer level.

What I said earlier, and what Sigred is getting at, is that that stat block doesn’t exist in the book. D&D Beyond made it up because of technical limitations. They are not WotC and they cannot make official rules. It’s reasonable to be confused, but it’s not a valid argument.
I totally understand why it's frustrating that you essentially need the mending cantrip for certain artificer builds, especially since you get so few cantrips in the class. But I also understand why it's not given for free, since it's not universal to all artificer builds.

Actually, the homunculus servant does have a stat block in the book that clearly shows a lack of hit dice.

Yeah, we're basically all just agreeing that the RAW on this class feature is correct, and there are no valid indications that it wouldn't be.

Does anyone know of a 5e rule about Homunculus (Artificer specifically) about whether they can use Hit Dice to heal during a short rest?
Though the Artificer Homunculus says it can be repaired via Mending, I'm not seeing a place where using Hit Dice to heal is not allowed.

The homunculus is not disallowed from using hit dice to heal like any other creature, it just doesn't have any hit dice.

Mending is > hit dice.
hit dice is limited.
mending is a cantrip. And can be done every 6 seconds infinitely.

*1 minute.
Mending has a 1 minute casting time.

1 minute*
still better than hit dice.

Considering the "Homunculus Servant" monster stat block specifically describes the one an Artificer crafts ... I'd say the argument is valid. https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/homunculus-servant

Yeah, I was referencing my earlier post where I mentioned the book only has the health calculation with no hit dice. We’re all on the same page, haha.
