Their exists at least one Beast that has a thrown weapon Ape. It lists "Rock" as a thrown weapon for 1d6+3, using their strength.
Assume you are a Druid with an 18 Wisdom. As a Bonus Action, you can cast Magic Stone and turn upto 3 pebbles into weapons that does 1d6+4 damage. Duration is one minute and it does not require concentration, leave the stones on the ground (you just need to touch them). Wiith your action you wildshape into an Ape and next turn you throw a stone rather than a 'rock'. Each pebble does 1d6+4 (or even 1d6+5 with a 20 Wisdom) rather than 1d6+3. Yeah, it's a lot of work to get +1/+2, but that leaves open the question....
If you can throw these magic stones, why couldn't you throw something else? Like say a vial of acid or a magic weapon that might even return to the thrower?
You can throw whatever you want. Apes have hands and access to anything that any other creature can do. Pick up a sword and attack with it. Throw a magic stone. Throw a vial of acid.
Importantly, none of it has anything to do with the “Rock” attack listed in the stat block. Any creature physically capable of doing these things can do them.

The main limitation is the lack of weapon proficiencies and needing the DM's approval for improvised weapons.
