When are we thinking it's necessary to choose Tides of Chaos? Before the roll is made or after the roll is made? I very much like the idea of doing it after as a way to quickly turn back time and try again. From a storytelling and roll playing POV, it just seems more fun. Thoughts?
The RAW (Rules As Written) are clear - the player needs to activate the Tides of Chaos ability prior to rolling the dice. Activating the ability grants advantage on the roll. You can't gain advantage on a roll that has already happened.
One of the great things about D&D though, is that your group can choose use whatever homebrew rules you wish to, for your own games.
Tides of Chaos gives you Advantage. The rules on Advantage and Disadvantage state that “you roll a second d20 when you make the roll”. The only thing that lets you see the result of the first d20 before deciding to roll again is the Lucky feat. Everything else, including Portent from the School of Divination, states that you use it before the roll.

Where does it say it must be done before a roll? I have a player who doesn't agree with this rule and he likes to complain about it.
