So the Aura of warding from the Oath of the Ancients paladins is as follow: "You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you have resistance to damage from spells". Does that include monster abilities that are a "Melee spell attack" or a "Ranged spell attack", but not a spell a player could cast?
An example of a melee spell attack would be things like the Life Drain of a specter.
Nope. The specter's Life Drain action lets it make a spell attack that isn't part of a spell. If Life Drain were a spell, it'd have a full spell description (complete with school, casting time, components, etc) and the specter would have the Spellcasting or Innate Spellcasting trait.
