The Brand of Castigation description states: "You always know the direction to the branded creature." How would that work with a Night Hag that steps into Ethereal Plane? Would blood hunter still know the direction to his prey since Ethereal Plane is kinda overlapping with the Prime Material Plane (with all those rules about taking damage if you end your turn in a solid object).
Hmm. The brand really should say what happens when the creature is in another plane. I'd say no. If you asked me the direction of another dimension, I would not be able to tell you.
I tend to agree when it comes to other dimensions. The only dimension in question remaining is Ethereal Plane since it practically duplicates the Primary Plane and you literally can see what's going on in a Primary Plane while moving through Ethereal one.
See Invisibility Spell also allows one to see creatures in the Ethereal Plane as vague forms. That also serves proof that Ethereal Plane is almost an invisible blanket upon the basic plane. And that's why I've got puzzled by Brand of Castigation. If one can see a creature with See Invisibility - does that mean that the Brand would also give away the direction. Sometimes I wish Matt Mercer himself would visit these threads with his classes discussions :D
But then, the question remains, does it not say that it works that way because it doesn't work that way, or an oversight/accidental omission when it was written? 🤔
If a creature was to use an invisibility spell and they’re branded by brand of castigation, would I still know which direction they are?
In my opinion, this is one of the purposes of the feat, and it's somewhat similar to the Hunter's Mark spell. The target can't be seen, but it can still be located thanks to the brand.

You aren't wrong, but it is still a different plane and the spells and features that see the overlap say they do.

This is very particular and peculiar edge case.
The Brand of Castigation now works as long as it’s on the same plane as you.
It's been updated on February 14, 2022.
