You can cast Darkness on a point in space, in which case it remains static, or to an object you are holding or isn't held or carried, in which case it moves with the object.
You can't target a giant's nose, or even his glasses, thus, and have it move with the giant. You can target the space his nose occupies, or the chair he is sitting on, but the darkness will stay there (or move with the chair...), and the giant will be able to move away from it.

Onyx, didn't you read the 2nd paragraph.
If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness.

You can target am object and it sheds anti-light
But you can't target an object being worn or carried by someone else.

Probably He meant to shoot the arrow in the example above.
If DM allows you could also cast darkness on something sticky and have a blindsight Familiar like a bat place it in the giant's hair (might count as an attack of the familiar though)
You can target a point in space. The darkness remains static. You can target an item you are holding. The darkness emanates from it and moves with it. You can target an item that it is not held or carried by anyone. The darkness emanates from it and moves with it. You can not target a creature. You can not target an item that a creature other than you is holding or carrying.
So, sure, you can cast it on an arrow and shoot it on a giant - you just need to be able to shoot properly while you're engulfed in the arrow's darkness while it's on your bow.
And you'd better hope the arrow doesn't bury itself within the giant, in which case the "anti-light" will be engulfed, just as if you had put it in a bag...

And you'd better hope the enemy doesn't have darkvision for magical darkness, because you'd be doing them a favor.
Or has tremorsense, or has blindsight, or is Bane. Darkness can bog down combat at the table faster than most things, so it seems best suited as an escape tool. And when darkness goes off, most of the unsuspecting enemies at my table are going to make a run for it too to try to get out of the darkness and away from what might be inside it attacking them.

Hi.
One of my players, a Tiefling bard, wanted to use the darkness-spell to origin from the nose of a giant, to blind it...
What would you do? It certainly is a cool idea, but definitely not what the spell is for...
I don‘t want her to do that again and again, but also don‘t see any way to prevent that usage of the spell.
What do you guys think of that? What would you do?

Or target an arrow you hold that then someone would have to Hit the giant's head with...
Ideally a Warlock with Devil's Sight or someone with truesight, in order to hit while in darkness. :p

With this I can work...
Thanks, it clarifies a lot. My group won‘t be happy about it, but at least I have a sollution for misusage of darkness.
I did read it. :p
