Hey guys! Recently my character died, well I say died, but she fell victim to a Deck of Many Things and her sole got taken. Ultimately rendering her un-playable. Hopefully one day during this campaign me and the party get to find the location and gem which contains her sole and defeat the creatures guarding it. Because how cool would that be, to experience that and then have one of your old characters reborn, for lack of a better word. Her body is safe for now and hopefully it stays that way.
So basically I am now having to create a new character which I have done. The only thing I haven't done yet is his backstory. He is a Blood Hunter, the class created by Matt Mercer (Crit roll) and his background is Witch Hunter. I am super exited to play him as he has the capability to really mix things up in our current campaign. Problem is I really don't know where to begin with his backstory. In the last 5 minutes I randomly conjured up a possible plot, super super rough...
"Necromancer trapped love of his lifes sole in a gem. (Similar to what happened to my old character) He killed him just a bit too late, and lives with the guilt of not being able to save her. His goal is to eventually find the gem to free his loves sole and bring her back. This is why he became a witch hunter/blood hunter. Because what better way to take revenge and potentially find her, by roaming the dark places of the world and kill those who inhabit and embrace the darkness"
As I say that is super rough. Yet I always struggle to find a starting point and that is what I was hoping to get some help with. Like what cool plot ideas could you think of for him? I have a thing of going super detailed with my backstories when I get started and I wanted to share with you my old characters story if you wouldn't mind reading it. I know it's long but it would be great to get some feedback because that way I can improve upon my writing and impliment that into my Blood Hunter. Some place names and city names are from our campaign only so that might be why you don't recognise some. So here goes I suppose:
Origin Story: Occasionally, Genasi result from exposure to a surge of elemental power through phenomena such as eruption from the inner planes or a planar convergence, elemental energy saturates any creatures in the area and might alter their nature enough that their offspring with other mortals are born as Genasi. Sky was born of this nature, as a result of this phenomena, Sky does not exhibit some of the usual visual traits of an Air Genasi (a given Genasi might have some features of the mortal parents - pointed ears from an Elf, stockier frame from a Dwarf, small hands and feet from a Halfling, exceedingly large eyes from a Gnome, and so on.)Born of Elvish descent, Sky has inherited physical characteristics of an elf, such as her slender physique and pointed ears, who knows if it stretches just beyond her physical appearance...She may even live as long (<750 years).
Early Life: Sky came into this world thanks to her parent’s insatiable desire for far flung odysseys. Elves take up adventuring out of wanderlust. Since they are so long-lived, they can enjoy centuries of exploration and discovery. Hailing from the Elven city of Elventree they would voyage far from the sanctuary of their forest home scarcely returning all the while seeking knowledge of the greater world. Maztica, was a location they were both eager to explore. Referred to by its inhabitants as The True World, Maztica was a large continent west of Faerûn. A land of jungles and mystery and home to the curious Tabaxi. They had the plan to summit the largest mountain to the north of Maztica to view a lay of the land which stood ahead of them. Upon cresting the top of the tallest mountain this is where they happened across an Aasimar. Not immediately approaching they remained distant and observed. Aasimar are placed in the world to serve as guardians of law and good. Their patrons expect them to strike at evil, led by example, and further the cause of justice. But this particular Aasimar had fallen to the face of evil. Begging for forgiveness he took it upon himself to reach into the Inner Planes of existence with powerful magic in order to summon a Djinni born from the elemental chaos. But not just any Djinni, this Aasimar required a noble as he was seeking "Wish" arguably the most powerful spell that a sorcerer or wizard could hope to learn. It allowed its caster to accomplish multiple, various effects ranging from duplicating other spell effects to altering reality to suit the caster's wish, hence its name and a noble Djinni would process exactly this. He wished to beg for forgiveness, to write his wrongs and to be given a chance to prove himself once again to be put back on the path of good. A vortex to the Plane of Air could manifest in the eye of a hurricane or in the clean, crisp air atop a high mountain, for example, hence why they found the Aasimar. He was attempting to reach the Elemental Plane of Air within which he would hopefully find contact with a Djinni. This didn't go as planned. If traveling through the Deep Ethereal, a blue curtain of vaporous color indicated the boundary of the Plane of Air's Border Ethereal region. Once in the Border Ethereal, a traveler could observe the Plane of Air and be detected by its denizens. As this was a naturally occurring vortex it didn't cross the Aasimar's mind at that any point, if the conditions changed, the vortex would collapse. This is exactly what happened. Normally this is something that could come and go un-noticed and if you didn't visually see the vortex or summon it yourself you would never know such a thing occurred. This time however was different. The winds changed and the vortex collapsed with a thunderous crack as the Aasimar was immersed within the Border Ethereal. This caused a huge surge of elemental power, a shockwave that completely swallowed the Aasimar and plumed from the mountains summit. The blast threw Sky's parents wayward and knocked them out cold. The blast altered their nature and from that day they were destined to birth a Genasi.
Sky was born into the bustling community of Elventree a settlement with a modest community largely comprised of nonhuman. Elventree had been built up with wood on ruins of stone buildings. There was an elegant but natural-looking palace. There were also a number of structures in the branches of trees, which were linked by rope ladders, walkways, and bridges of silver rope and white planks. The ground was reserved for cooking fires and gathering spaces where residents met to pass news or share a song. Elventree has a population of 900, 200 of which being elves with most of those being Wood Elves. It had no formal leadership and no formal laws, but nevertheless the inhabitants were able to live in harmony with each other and with the land. It wasn’t long before she began to show her true self and lucky for Sky she was accepted lovingly by her parents upon her Genasi features revealing themselves. It didn’t take long for the other inhabitants to adopt the same mind-set. Perhaps due to their insatiable elvish desire to fill their minds with further knowledge of the magical world. But who knows? Maybe they just enjoyed the thought of one of their kin birthing a magical being from worlds unknown. After all it certainly gave them some to be haughty about and we all know what elves are like. Her birth even became somewhat of a festival amongst the population of the settlement and each year they would throw a fabulous elven inspired party to celebrate. Obviously the other races where invited but being talked at for hours upon end about how an elf gave birth to some magical being from a world unknown would be hard work for anyone. Even with the vast quantity of cheese, fruits and wine one would consume at such a bash. Just imagine if the news spread to the other Elven towns and cities. They would have never heard the end of it. Thankfully it was more of a local tale, something to tell the grand kids. And hey, they were elves…Any excuse for a party.
Elventree was home to a number of fine bowyers and fletchers, as well as wood carvers. It also produced herbs, medicinal plants, exotic fruit, and tapestries. It imported swords, armor, parchment, wine, and seafood. Elventree was not on a caravan route and there were no trading houses. Supplies were brought to the town and carried away by trading parties. When the rare caravan did stop in town, it was considered a festival and the community came together to buy directly from the merchant. Yet again another reason to throw a party. This infrastructure influenced heavily on Sky’s teenage years. She would often use the herbs and medicinal plants to dabble with alchemical formulae attempting to create her own concoctions to sell to the passing traders. These where the years when the Wood Elf mannerisms in her became more prominent, during this time she became akin with animals and nature and Elventree became the perfect playground to fill her days with new experiments and adventures.
Later life:(Present) By the age of 18 Sky had mastered the alchemical arts and began seeking fulfilment elsewhere. By now this desire led her to turn her attention to more experimental forms of creation and her need for answers grew stronger. All she ever wanted was to learn who and what she was and how she came to be. Her parents would always tell her of their wondrous expeditions and adventures to lands unknown. They always believed the day atop the mountain was the reason for Sky’s birth but they could never confirm this suspicion as even though the desire for answers was strong, their bodies where no longer and adventures like those where far behind them. Sky took it upon herself to find the answers her parents never could. She knew she had power within her but mastering it was a losing battle. She did learn however to control her power in a very minimal form. She draw from the source of power within her to encompass her hands with a magical glow, which when directed at something could imbue it with magical power. She learnt to heal minor wounds, to revive small creatures and even direct the power into objects that seemed to result in an impressive increase in its capabilities. She could even regrow flowers and breathe new life into the floral nature around her. This proved nothing more than a pretty party trick but perhaps this could be used for more and it became her quest to find out. This manifested itself in desires far greater than her home of Elventree and it wasn’t long before this led to the beginning of her far flung adventures of self-discovery. Her first being a trip to Evereska, an elven city and a great source of magical power.
Evereska itself was situated on a large stone pedestal that rose nearly a thousand feet from the grassland below. She spent a year of her life here, reading books from the great libraries and meeting amazing new people which helped her to grow and learn more about the power within her and how she came into existence. Here she learnt to harness the constant breeze accompanied her all her life, tousling the hair and stirring the clothing. She discovered she could use as a form of protection, hurling it at foes as protection from falling. She learnt to use it to levitate and as a form of unending air if ever she was underwater. She acquired knowledge of different magic and how to detect and decipher it. It was here she began to tinker further with imbuing her magic within items of her choice. She began to study the crafting of everyday items as something magical and infuse parts of themselves into those crafted objects to create magical objects. Where a wizard or cleric will cause an effect in the open, Sky took to temporarily bringing out an item's capability. For Sky a tunic became a suit of armor, a cloak became a sturdy shield, and gloves provided the strength of an ogre. Sky learnt to recognize the patterns of magic in crafted goods and even raw materials, and to use her own magic to pull it out of them in fantastic ways. She grew a new found respect for magic, to her; there is no difference between the magic of a druid, wizard, cleric, or any other caster. She can now see magic as something purer than its petty divisions. Probably the most useful skill of all that she mastered was to heal the dying. Upon placing her fingers upon the chest of a dying creature her magic would embrace their bodies and heal them of their ailments which would have otherwise ended in death. The power she used to experiment with back in Elventree could now be used for so much more.
One day while in the great library she happened upon a book in a dark corner of the library, covered in dust and cobwebs and buried amongst the hundreds of thousands which resided within the library. She took the book and placed it upon a small rounded table with a single chair and a candle in the middle. Upon lighting the candle to sat and read under its flickering gaze. It was here which introduced her to her greatest discovery yet. “While many Genasi were the result of recent dalliances of genies or other elementals with humans, the majority were not, but were rather the children of Genasi themselves.” It was from this book that she learnt how Genasi could also happen upon this world by a rare circumstance of mortals being exposed to forms of great elemental power altering their nature so much so that they birth a Genasi. This being exactly how Sky became to be and proved her parents suspicions as correct. “Genasi were in a constant state of elemental energy, having no “neutral” state they could fall back on. Each Genasi had a native elemental state, known as a “manifestation,” which was passed down to them through their ancestry. A few learned to master more than one manifestation” and perhaps one day Sky could do the same. She thought that if she could find the perfect conditions to recreate the vortex to the Ethereal maybe this would give her the answers she desired. Her time in Evereska had come to an end, she had a greater cause to pursue now and pursue it she did.
Her first step was to visit the very location where her parents travelled all those years ago and where she now knew she was flung upon this world, the mountains of Maztica. She spelt around a year in Maztica residing with a tribe of Tabaxi who welcomed her in of which Sky became very fond of. This is where she picked up her name. “Sky” came from her parents however the Tabaxi referred to her as Cloudy Skies due to their nature of naming things. She grew to embrace this and still carries this name with her today. She learnt a lot during this time and helped the tribes in their expeditions of trade throughout Maztica and beyond and it was here she discovered she quite enjoyed being a Wagonmaster, exploring, learning and more often than not meeting new wonderful people. “There's always a road I haven't travelled before, I'm always looking for new places to explore.” She grew better at fighting and using her skills and powers to protect herself and the Tabaxi people. Healing wounds and fighting off potential threats.
Upon turning 20 the perfect conditions never occurred and thus the vortex never triggered. Sky surmised that the conditions could arise anywhere in the world at any point and thus she no longer needed to stay in Maztica. Upon her travels with the Wagons she learnt of a fabulous city of engineering and tinkering, Orvath. A perfect place to practice her Artificer arts.
Is your new character cold and calculating, seeing every creature as a potential thing they might have to kill? Did they get a little broken by the loss of their loved one and the grief over not being able to save her in time? Has the character shed his humanity and embraced this monstrous side he has added to himself through alchemy? Or are they still a good person, just a little emotionally scarred. Do they try extra hard to protect the people they care for, or do they avoid developing new friendships and relationships for fear they will someday be lost to them as well.
Pain on that level changes people, heck it incentivized the character to take up the blood hunter ways. That is a big step to take, a lot of determination, desperation, stupidity, or bravery.
Do they have any family at all left or was the person they lost their only connection to the rest of the world.

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."

Some good points there to give me some motivation for a starting point. Thanks a lot man!
Just trying to get the creative juices flowing, questions seem to be the best for that. Hope it works out for you!
