I'm planning to play as a firbolg for my first campaign, I've read up on the lore from Volo's guide to monsters and the original lore and I really like both of these!
My main question is about how the Firbolg would be viewed in normal society?
E.g. What do people think of one in a city? And what would people think of one in a smaller village? Does the stature of the people make a difference about how they are viewed?
I'd also like to ask some advice about the way my DM views this, he adviced me to play a more humanoid race for the first game. And to be honest I can kind of see where he is coming from. But I really want to play something I like as much as this for the first campaign.
His main reasoning behind this seems to be about racial issues from NPC's. Like Tieflings being shunned for example.
What do you guys think about this?
I'mIsorry for the long post, but I'd really appreciate your answer and opinions on this!
Well probably not very well recognized in larger cities since they tend to avoid them, probably the more scholarly or worldly will know of Firbolgs. In further flung hamlets and towns they would probably think it bad luck to harm them. You don't go out of your way to anger those folk, they will torment you or get you lost, bad luck to mess with. Best to stay on their good side, or maybe just stay way. I don't think any places would be openly antagonistic to a firbolg.
Not sure the specifics of the world but that is kinda what i picture when I think about the firbolg, Native americans come to mind.

It might be hard to interact with some people and the DM have the chance for some nice roleplaying.
Don forget that you have the inate ability disguise self that might help you in hamlet and such.
I'm not stupid. I'm just unlucky when I'm thinking.
