I had this silly fun idea and wanted to make a Kobold paladin that fully believes he is a Dargonborn. He hasn't gotten his breath yet not full size because of a delayed growth spurt or something. My problem is I can't think of a way for him to be orphaned/abandoned by his tribe of kobolds to make him be raised by some sort of paladin order. Have you any ideas that may help me flesh this character out?
Kobolds are not always super attentive, maybe the egg guard were off defending the rest of the tribe during an attack from adventurers, and the party paladin decided to bring to their order, a little before you hatched.
Perhaps said paladin was also a Dragonborn, and served as your parent for a little while, which would explain why you would think yourself a dragonborn.
This is a great example I was looking for! Any ideas of specific Dragonborn led churches or paladins? I'm mostly worrying about a God to constantly mention. I know the Kobold God, Kurtulmak, is imprisoned and cannot really help their followers.
Maybe a fellow kobold from his tribe, years ago, decided to play a prank on some dragonborn. So that kobold took a kobold egg, snuck into a dragonborn hatchery, and left that kobold egg among the dragonborn eggs. They look similar, so the ruse wasn't caught until the eggs hatched and one of them was a kobold. So of course the dragonborn immediately exiled the interloper. But since your character was born among dragonborn, he assumed he is a dragonborn, and he doesn't understand why his people banished him. Maybe he thinks this is simply part of dragonborn culture - each hatchling gets thrown to the winds to learn to survive, or die. So your character is on a quest to prove himself strong and capable so that his dragonborn kin will recognize him as worthy and eventually welcome him back into the tribe.
I now cannot help but think of Kobolds like Cuckoo's, leaving their eggs in the 'nests' of Dragonborn. If they performed the old switcheroo and made off with one of the dragonborn eggs there could also be a dragonborn wondering around thinking its a koblod who grows up to be a much respected and feared leader as it can use a breath weapon attack just like the really big dragons.

Perhaps this is how kobold tribes form. One kobold swaps a dragonborn egg for its own, and raises them to be a powerful leader. Kobolds from other tribes band together under the dragonborn's banner for protection, and a small kobold tribe is formed.

As far as dragonborn-led churches, I'd look into Bahamut, the platinum dragon god.
This is amazing, thank you so much. This gives me an amazing idea and I'm excited for this character.
