If it's lost or hidden, then you're free to make up anything you wish.
If it's myth, there'sthere are oodles of that already going back to official publications in 1975 - many not yet printed as 5e canon but not refuted or found incompatible with 5e canon, but as myths go, their accuracy is most often highly debatable and easily wrong.
Do not discount the idea of a cult being recently created for some reason. When someone envisions an answer to a common problem and convinces others to accept the same solution by appealing to desperation, a cult is born. This also applies to lost cults and their revivals.
If you want to make one, I recommend starting with a perceived problem that someone wants to be solved and inventing a "grasping-at-straws" solution that carries a high probability of devastation. The solution could be offered as a lie by one who needs followers to become powerful either through influence or through arcane potential.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
My idea is of either an necromantic cult or genocidal cult of elf's wanting to wipe out humans and i'm going to tie into back to a great uncle of one of my players characters who holds something that the cult requires to complete their goal
There are some great ones around from previous editions. The ones that springs to mind based on your follow up description:
- Twisted Rune: A Cabal of liches and undead that operate by influencing and through agents mostly. Mainly centred around Calimshan to the south, but they have also infiltrated knights of the shield that opeate alogn the sword. (https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Twisted_Rune)
Hey all,
Looking to see if there is any mysterious cult or orders lost over the years within the DnD world...
I am looking for any information of potentially dark/evil cults maybe even necromancy that is lost, hidden or maybe even a myth within the world...
Have an idea to link a player character to a named character from a previous adventure
Several D&D worlds to pick...

Here's a publication history provided by WotC (which is not an endorsement—just information).

If you're on the forgotten realms, then the Netherise wizards were defeated long ago when they used to rule the world.
They still have a few cults left, trying to regain their old power.

BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
