I am playing this character in Princes of the Apocalypse (Elemental Evil). Let me know what you think of this backstory for one of the edgiest class/species combinations:
Norviel was the son of Vanis Sharvit, formerly a Drow priestess of Lolth from the Underdark, and his other father was Akalith Maelstrom, a human sorcerer from Waterdeep. His parents raised him in Daggerford, a modest town along the Sword Coast. After retiring from adventuring, they opened a small tavern, The Broken Drumstick, where they even gave birth to Norviel, right in front of the bar, for all patrons to see. He was a local celebrity from the moment he was born. Despite widespread prejudices against Drow, Norviel and his family were largely embraced by the people in Daggerford as heroes and community leaders, being prevalent members of the Taverners’ Confederation, and the larger Council of Guilds.
Norviel’s childhood was full of love and support. Akalith regaled him with tales of magic and mystery, while Vanis taught him of the culture of the Drow and legends of heroes such as Drizzt who sought to liberate them from the oppression of the dark goddess that enthralled them. Despite the contentious history of the Drow, Vanis often expressed a longing for his culture, specifically the cuisine. Norviel took an interest in the family business and would often assist in the kitchen as a child, and eventually he became the lead cook in the kitchen. When not on duty in the kitchen, he would regale the patrons with stories and songs of adventurers from Faerun, namely his parents.
He loved his family’s tavern, but he knew its success was limited by its cuisine. So he set out to become the most renowned chef in Faerun. He studied with the Guild of Butchers in Waterdeep, apprenticed under Percival Gallard Woodehouse at the Traitor Picks in Skullport, and earned a position as a performance chef at the Hearth of Candlekeep. The Hearth, being in the greatest repository of knowledge in all of Faerun, gave Norviel access to an unparalleled wealth of study materials. In addition to studying his culinary craft, he began to study arcana in hopes to further enhance his culinary potential. He frequently visited the shrines of Deneir, Gond, and Milil in hopes to bolster his knowledge and skill craft. He began inscribing his culinary tools with the symbols of these deities. Then one day, he heard a voice.
Milil, exarch of creativity, eloquence, and inspiration, had taken an interest in Norviel’s passion for both his craft and showmanship. Norviel had hoped for a magical boon to his skills. Little did he know he had forged a pact with a demigod. Milil knew that he and Norviel would do great things together, captivate all of Faerun with their culinary creations, and bring fame to the Broken Drumstick.
One day while traveling the Long Road on the way home to Daggerford, he stops in the Dessarin Valley and takes a gig working the kitchen at the tavern in Red Larch. When the inn is attacked by strange elemental cultists, he knew he needed to follow in his fathers' footsteps and become an adventurer. And besides, what exciting new ingredients and spices might he discover by exploring the very elements themselves?!?
He's a Hexblade Warlock / College of Swords Bard. Instead of focusing his studies on music like typical bards, he embraced knifework to hone his culinary craft, and loves to tell stories. His hex weapon is his chef's knife which, when drawn for battle, extends into a longsword. He can also do the same with his cleaver/battleaxe, or meat tenderizer/warhammer. While his skills as a chef are exquisite, he utilizes mage hand and some basic illusion magic while cooking for a little extra flair.
That's right. The hexblade drow, who you'd think to be one of the edgiest characters in the world, is actually the happiest person in the world, and he's adventuring to become a better chef and make his dads proud. His hexblade patron is a lesser deity of bards who wants to foster his creativity, and see his vision come to fruition.
