Okay, so I am a DM for my group. The players, even though they are level 2 and 3, have managed to kill a tanarukk and 2 redcaps( Volos guide to monsters). How can I tie the tanarukk into the main villain , who is a lich king?
The lich king has either dominated the tanarukk chief, forcing his warriors to fight for the lich king. Or the lich king has promised the tanarukk clan power and wealth in exchange for their loyalty. Or, the lich king has disposed of the tanarukk chief and rules the clan directly. Or the lich king killed the tanarukk chief, but raised his as an undead thrall to rule the clan.
My question is why does it need too? Tanarukkes, as said in Volo's seems to be smart enough to kinda think for its self. Also, this could be the time to show the players that this world your running is not just one bad guy that only your PC know about maybe there is a demon that is taking over the Hellgate and this is the first scouts if you will, dominating goblins as subordinates(sorry that's kinda 3e). Or it could by that this one Tanarukke left the tribe to become stronger and come back as chief, that way he is not a tied to the main villain character. Also like Imoxator's idea that being said filcat's idea can be a little bad only because, his idea will give you PC's possession of a book of true names and there for a full tribe of this creatures.
The most powerful lich in my world has made a hobby out of starting wars. He would pick/create a minion or group of minions to stir up trouble between nations and sit back and watch the show.
He was a fun villain. His motivation was almost entirely boredom.
he cursed an orc using dark magic and enslaved the tanarukk as a child and warped its mind and used it for evil perhaps the bbeg enslaved an entire orc camp and thats where the tanarukk came from

Not sure what are you asking. Can you be more specific?
A Lich King could use the orc tribe as fodder for an army. He acted as the shaman of the tribe in the creation of the Tanarukk.

The lich king has a Book of True Names, in which there are the True Names of a bunch of tanarukks.
