My players have gone to a new continent in order to attempt to liberate a city from the Undead. However, they are a little nervous about whether they are ready for something so big. SO - in the capital of this new Continent, they were made aware that a tournament is going to go on during a festival within the next few days. One of my players is super interested and managed to convince the others to get into this.
So - here is how I plan on doing this.
The opening bit of this tournament is a grand melee. I am not going to make my poor characters fight 1 mediocre enemy after another - so I decided to "cinematically" describe how the grand melee goes based on 3 rolls that each of my characters make. Those rolls are going to be done based on "how" my players would prefer to fight for each of those three rolls. IE: My Monk decides to tumble around and be a squirmy and quick jerk. I'd make him roll an Acrobatics at Advantage for his Grand Melee work. And so on and so forth for my characters.
Hopefully this allows them to feel like they are already kind of seen as bad asses by the onlookers, because the Grand Melee is supposed to winnow the fighters down to those that are actually WORTH 1x1 combat. So even if they fall out in their 'first round' they are still seen as being impressive in a group sense, and this should help to boost their in-character esteem for what they are hoping to pull off.
I have some NPC's worked out for htem to battle against, including the reigning Champion. =D So this next session (happening tonight) should theoretically be an extremely combat heavy session (which is rare in my campaign as my players are usually very RP focused, but I figured a tournament would be a good warm-up and combat refresher for an arc where they decided to go battle a city overtaken by a Necromancer and some evil giants).
The winner's purse is at least 10K GP too, cause one of my player characters is a Dragon Runt and shinies are a good motivator.
I really like this idea, I love tournaments in and out of D&D. Even in the anime I watch, the tournament arcs are always my favorites. However, with D&D it's a little tricky, because you never want to keep certain players out for too long, so try to think of something they can "be doing" while the fighting is going on that they aren't involved in, or even the group could "register as a team" then if enough of them survive the grand melee, then the whole team is allowed to participate in the 1v1, that way they aren't excluded from the tournament just because of a few bad rolls. Additionally, you need a safety net, like what happens if EVERYONE rolls poorly, then they can't join the tournament? Maybe a loser's bracket, or an additional fight between their team and another team before entering the 1v1. Just some thoughts my friend! Cheers and I hope everyone enjoys!
Well for expediency, I will have 2 fights going on at once in the 1 v 1's. But yes, I am thinking up some hooks for what happens if everyone rolls poorly (Oh pls god don't let that happen). :D
Just in case tho, I think I am gonna have some possible gambling/learning arcs on the side. Just... in case. 0_0
