I've read up on Eladrin and watched a few videos about them, but from all of 5e content I've seen I can't find a good backstory, at least a start of one. It's mostly the part of where I came from. Eladrin are from the Feywild. Why would one leave that plane (not specifically to adventure, but the whole plane itself)? How? Is there maybe Eladrin civilizations near some sort of planar gateway to the material plane?
Note the adventure we plan on running for this is White Plume Mountain from Yawning Portal
TL;DR: why would an eladrin leave the Feywild instead of adventuring on their home plane
Fey creatures cross over from the feywild all the time to see what those quirky, short lived mortals are up to. Considering the feywild is timeless and eternal, maybe the best adventures can only be found on the mortal plane.
My Faun character from the Feywild left for love. Some adventurers came through and saved her and she fell in love with one of them after a while of being their guide. Once the adventurers she was with got what they needed - they left through the portal they arrived in. My Faun went after her lover did but when she got to the material plane there was no sign of her lover or the adventurers. It's basically implied there was a time-wimey screwup thanks to the Feywild but I've deliberately left it vague for the DM if I ever decide to play this character.
If you have the chance, read "Heroes of the Feywild". Is a 4e book, it has tons of lore about the Feywild and its denizens, and advice to give fey character (eladrin, satyrs, etc) a background associated with the Feywild as well. Just ignore the mechanical stuff (or talk with your DM if you're interested in converting something to 5e).
As already mentioned, some eladrin go to the Material Plane to experience that stuff that can only be experienced in this specific plane. But there are also eladrin cities that exist in places were "worldfalls" (an event when some place in the Feywild goes to the Material Plane for a time, and viceversa) happens. I'be always used them to send my players to the Feywild if I don't want to use the cliché fey crossing, but I guess that this can also be used to bring fey to the Material Plane.
Apparently, the Yuirwoods is known for spots where the barrier between Planes is "thin" - often leading to portals to and from the Feywild. At least, that's the story I'm going with. Like Zero_DM said, "Heroes of the Feywild" is a good source for ideas and scenarios.

Time fades even legend...
