I created a party based on Marvel SuperHeroes. It wasn't a time travel thing...I just worked to make their skills and traits translate into a D&D environment.
So I have a fighter who is proficient with a sword (The Swordsman) and one who is a master with a bow (Hawkeye) A dwarven ranger (Wolverine) and a female wizard who only wears red (Scarlet Witch) Finally, I have a cleric who's proficient in the marital arts. Her name is Heather but wants to be referred to as the MoonDragon.
My DM made the mistake of letting me choose the specific powers of my astral self for my Way of the Astral Self Monk. Crazy strength? Sure! Microscopically precise dexterity? Sure! Able to spin a quarterstaff at supersonic speeds? Sure! My character is at Lvl. 5 right now, and is definitely one of the worst fighters in the party, but when it comes to the story aspect of the game, as long as I have 2 Ki points and some luck on the die, I can get the party out of almost any trouble.
A warning to DM's: It doesn't matter how much of a Jojo fan you are, if someone comes to you with an astral self monk, your first reaction should not be "you should make your astral self more powerful" because this can lead to your monk learning that at any time, he can just spin his staff quickly enough to where he can helicopter-airlift the whole party to safety provided he rolls high enough.

All hail the great and mighty platypus.
Resisting is simply standing in front of the tide and pushing at it. Even if you endure at first, you will eventually break down. Adapting, by contrast, is turning into a fish.

Rangers are not underpowered. They’re just exploration-oriented.
I've always wanted to do a warlock whose patron was very young for whatever being they were and very excited about having their first warlock.

I’ve actually had a player with a character like that. He was a half-elf warlock of the archfey, and his patron was really two- a sprite and a pixie- who had recently been ascended to the rank and power of archfey due to a complicated series of extremely lucky events allowing them to gain great favor with the Summer Queen. The warlock is their first, and they mostly let him do what he wants, seeing through his eyes to view the material plane (and especially its peoples), due to their interest in it.

a character of odd backstory once a great and powerful psion wizard before she hit herself with a feeblemind while fighting the lord of sapphire dragons her mind broke into fragmented bits all lost in time and barely working with the last vestiges of her humanity she reached to the stars her wishes granted by a everlasting power her mind was somewhat fixed she become only slightly insane but even its power can only nearly fix the damage she still suffers from amesia schizophrenia phobias of many sorts bipolar disorder and several other mental woes her wizardy expertise her lost per her mental condensed down into a form of sorcery and the being she reached out to still keeps dies to her
I once DM'd for a group of players whose characters were anti orphan and would burn entire villages to kill everything in sight. they were also convinced that what they did was the right thing. Once they were approached by a king with a bill for every town they had burned/pillaged and they killed the king and burned the capital. Also one of them played as Goofy from Mickey mouse.
This character had Multiple Personality disorder and every time A quest started he would roll a D100 to see what his alignment was and would roleplay accordingly.
Currently playing a GOOlock whose patron is an ancient AI satellite styled off of VALIS by Philip K Dick, with a tech flavor to invocations/pact stuff, though no one in world recognizes the flavor as such, it's just weird and otherworldly. Also play where he occasionally glitches when talking, Max Headroom style.
Also tried a halfling UA giantsoul sorcerer, constantly amused by all the "tiny" people he traveled with.
I think I went a bit to wild on this character, but basically my character, Lillian DeGrand, is a thief that managed to find a genie that was so grateful for letting him out that he promised no unforeseen consequences on her wishes. (That can only mean one thing....)
Now, she is a level 20 Rouge with THIRTY on ALL stats, a TON of feats, and at least half proficiency with EVERYTHING, even saving throws. And, she is also the leader of an Multidimensional Secret Criminal Organization.
With an such a high bonus in DEX, Expertise, and Gloves of Thievery, she has a +27 bonus on sleight of hand. I repeat, a PLUS TWENTY SEVEN bonus on Sleight of Hand. I'm Pretty sure that if I rolled a nat20 on Sleight of Hand, I would steal the victims SOUL along with everything else the poor dupe was wearing, and it would be at least HOURS before the guy noticed.

Yeah, I'm talking Touhou level of OP here.
HOW did the DM allow this lol

I can find a loophole there. Just twist it in the most obvious way possible.

I haven't played a ton of outlandish characters, but there's two I've enjoyed the most:
A human rogue build that narratively is a politician who sneaks around at night finding dirt and blackmail on his political opponents to help him get higher in status and power. Much more focused on non-combat specialization, but later in the campaign became pretty dang deadly.
A sorcerer who narratively plays much more like a rogue than a sorcerer. Deception, Persuasion, and Sleight of Hand are very common rolls. This is made even better by another party member, one of my character's best friends, who is a religious zealot paladin devoted to justice and fairness. Lots of funny moments between the two.
The most interesting character I've played with has been a one-armed Tabaxi, around the age (in human years) of 13, who is a completely homebrewed concept. Essentially, he has no set class, and instead takes on traits from the other party members based on what skills and information is given to him. The party has a spellcaster, a barbarian, and a rogue, so naturally the kid's ability set is kind of...all over the place.

I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
And what loophole is that?
Oh, I see.
I guess that also extends to Foreseen consequences as well
