Hello all, I wanted to know if anyone has any tips on getting better at roleplaying or ways to practice roleplaying? When I'm in a new group I tend to freeze up and get stage fright even though I'm playing online. I'm also a bit shy as well if that matters. Any tips or suggestions would be helpful thank you.
I too am shy. About the only way out is through. Just let the other players know you're shy, and it may take you a bit to warm up. Then after you feel more comfortable, you may feel like you can open up and talk more.
Honestly... put on a mask. Maybe wear sunglasses. Just something to make you feel in "disguise". Take that element of yourself out of it for a little bit. You don't need to cosplay as your character or anything, but I can see, for example, in your avatar the character has a face-covering scarf. Wear something like that and you'll feel a little safer... you already feel a little bit like your character with that element added.
One thing you can do, if you don't feel like putting on an accent, is to change up your manner of speaking. Use a particular catchphrase repeatedly in your dialogue, or don't use contractions when you speak. Little things like that can differentiate a character without committing you to something you may not be comfortable doing at the table. And once the ice is broken, people tend to loosen up pretty quickly anyway.
