So in a few weeks, my group is gonna start curse of strahd and I thought it would be fun to use the new Van Richten's Dhampire lineage.
I wanted to play " a vampire" not a "vampire fighter" or a "vampire wizard" just "A-VAMPIRE" So I thought the best way to do that was to build a Monk (way of shadow or the death one for flavor) because the dhampire bite counts as a monk weapon due to its wording (a simple melee weapon which you are proficient with) and I thought it would be cool to make that my primary attacking thing. I am FULLY aware that because of this the build would be INCREDBILY MAD (requiring DEX for AC, CON for bite attack/damage, and WIS for DC's) but I'm not out for optimal, just out for a good time lol.
HOWEVER! I then got to thinking that since CoS only goes to level 10, the scaling of the bite with martial arts really won't matter (itll switch to a d6 half way through). a single die size increase is hardly as appealing as my original thought of a really big martial arts bite lol
So i started thinking, what other classes could this dhampire bite with focus on CON be good with? maybe Beast Barbarian?
Even if you made a Dhampir Monk, you'll still be better off hitting things with a two handed quarterstaff or spear for 1d8 damage per hit, even after you get the damage increase wouldn't you? You could use it for Flurry of Blows I guess. That works better with the whole concept in a way though, since the idea of a character that just bites everything it fights sounds pretty daft (even the actual Vampire monster doesn't just bite bite bite bite bite).
You could go with Barbarian or Fighter and take the Tavern Brawler feat which includes:
When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike or an improvised weapon on your turn, you can use a bonus action to attempt to grapple the target
This is the wrong way round - I'd ask the DM if it could switch to "If you grapple a target, you can use a bonus action to make an unarmed attack." I'd allow it because it would be flavourful and really fun.
