Yup, bugbear is kinda ridiculously powerful. I play a bugbear Wizard in a purely mechanical game, and it's ridiculous. Combine Surprise Attack with a spell like Jim's magic missile or scorching ray, and you've got what can only be described as a boatload of damage.
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

I agree Long limbed in extremely useful for a melee character
Sneaky is good for stealth proficiency but if you want that you can get it from background or class, so the actual gain there is what skill proficiency you would have given up if had not got stealth from race. Small and medium both occupy a 5 ft cube so in my experience places where a small creature can go but not a medium is pretty rare.
Surprise attack is another really good feature that comes up nearly every combat and if you use variant encumbrance powerful build is huge.
Bugbear is a really powerful race though I think flying races edge them out, they are a little circumstantial for melee characters but for ranged characters flight is massive
I have been meaning to play a bugbear assassin first round surprise auto-crit surprise attack plus sneak attack is ridiculous about 8d6 worth of damage.

- Someone once told me that it is possible to play an artificer without collateral damage. They were wrong. Without collateral damage, what is the point of playing an Artificer?
- Nothing solves a problem better than a little gnome power!

Underrated combo to take maximum advantage of Long-Limbed: bugbear echo knight

Active characters:
Askatu, hyperfocused vedalken freedom fighter in Wildspace (Zealot barb/Swashbuckler rogue/Battle Master fighter) Green Hill Sunrise, jaded tabaxi mercenary trapped in the Dark Domains (Battle Master fighter) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
That gives me an evil idea bugbear echo knight with a reach weapon with sentinel to just lock enemies down though you only get one opportunity attack per round.

I hope to at some point play a bugbear wizard. Cast scorching ray for 12d6 damage at level 1 if all three hit. The fun thing with that is if you say you have a bugbear assassin rogue everyone knows what ot expect a bugbear wizard isn't so obvious.
I run an NPC bugbear ranger in a campaign I run. I keep it a level below the party and equip it with their cast offs and unwanted magic just to keep it from being overpowering.
True, I was planning to play a bugbear assassin for an upcoming Waterdeep dragon heist game but I decided on a Drow wizard instead. I wonder how Suprise attack works with magic missiles and AOE evocation for over-channel or chromancy for the bonus to initiative. I wonder if multiclassing is worth it because assassinate works on all attacks.

Surprise attack doesn’t work with magic missile, or with AoEs generally. It only applies to attack rolls, and neither of those have them. Assassinate, too.
Only things that involve an attack roll are considered an attack. Since MM doesn’t involve a roll, it’s not an attack. Most, if not all, AoEs require a saving throw, so they are not “attacks” either.
Its one of those things where rules definitions don’t quite make a lot of common sense.

Sure, your grandfather's boring old magic missile won't benefit at all from Surprise Attack. But if you make it gluten-free...

I played a level 8 bugbear armorer artificer/echo knight.
The guy could unleash 8 attacks on the first round of combat, from two different directions, each with an extra 2d6 damage on them from the bugbears surprise attack. The BBEG didn't know what hit her.
Playing a bugbear in Icespire Peak, and it's absurd how often its racial features come into play.
Long Limbed + Sneaky is the best part of being Large plus the best part of being Small, together in a Medium package.
Quietly slither through small dark spaces to stab a critter from 10 feet away, with Surprise Attack bonus damage.
I need to remind myself to leave stuff for the other PCs to do so they don't get bored.
Most races have features that only matter under special conditions, or a limited number of times per day, but I bugbear all the damn time.

Maybe it's specific to Icespire Peak, multiple places explicitly say a small creature can fit but not a medium one.
But our actual small PCs are back-row casters, so that leaves the bugbear creeping through the gaps.
