* - which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell
Oops.
I'd personally houserule that sight is not required if you can be aware of the spell by other means.

If you want to be effective, not necessarily just pump out fireball/lightning bolt/chromatic orb/cone of code/etc. then don't forget those basic support spells. There are some great spells that I just don't see people using. Need to block line of sight 'fogcloud', need to slow an enemy group or force an enemy caster to roll concentration, sleet storm (I had completely undervalued this spell until I realized how versatile it is especially if there is another caster in the group.

Sometimes what wizards' spells lack in action economy they make up for in control. Sometimes you wanna max damage, sometimes controlling the battlefield to your party's advantage. It depends on the context.

Ah, I knew it. I just couldn't find it re-reading the spell. I had the same snafu with Hellish Rebuke in the Coliseum the other day.

You must be able to see the caster within 60ft. Of you. It is later on in the description.
