I'm new to DnD, my GM ended up giving me a ring of alter self. I have finally gotten the time to research it, trying to be more useful in the party as a Fighter. I figured out that fighter actually has a lot of dps when using a Greatsword plus the passive action surge along with extra attack. So at level 13 I am getting six attacks if I use the extra attack skill? Thats one question.
Alter Self:
While researching, I noticed the trogdolyte form allows for 3 attacks. My questions are:
1. If I transform into the trogdolyte can I attack using greatsword plus passive action surge plus get the natural extra 3 attacks per attack action as well as attack twice with claws and once with bite all in one turn?
2. If not, what would be the best way to utilize the skill and how to max my damage to a boss?
3. I have gotten lots of mixed answers while searching as to whether or not the natural ac/natural atk/natural abilities are kept. If my armor gives me an ac of 20 the trog has a natural ac of 11, does that mean I will have 31 ac? Do I also keep it's natural ability of stench?
4. What would be some good defensive forms or other forms that are extremely useful?
yes, the fighter class does get 3 attacks by taking the attack action at that level and the action surge ability allows you to take the attack action twice in a single turn (although you need a short rest or long rest before you can use action surge again).
With regards your character's ring, there is no "ring of alter self" as an official magic item, so you would need to refer to your DM with any queries about this homebrew magic item.
I expect that it allows you to cast the Alter Self spell on yourself though. The page for that spell defines explicitly what benefits it bestows and doesn't mention a troglodyte form.
Looking at your specific questions:
If any form change grants natural attacks, unless it specifically states that these are in addition to weapon attacks, they replace weapon attacks. Further, if a form grants a number of natural attacks, they cannot all be used at the same time unless the stat block included the action "multi attack" which will define which attacks can be combined.
You should refer to your DM for this (also see above).
Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition has specific armor calculations - this means that natural armor doesn't stack with wearing armor (unless it specifically states that the natural armor grants a bonus to AC). Simply, you can choose the AC from your armor, OR the AC from your natural armor.
Without knowing how the item works, it's not possible to offer assistance on this.
