My group is finishing up Waterdeep Dragon Heist and getting ready to start Dungeon of the Mad Mage. I'm leaving my current character behind and starting a new one. My current concept is an Eladrin who was training in Archery (Fighter-Arcane Archer) in the Feywild when he was contacted by an Archfey to enter their service and settle a grudge with someone in the Dungeon. As a sign of good faith the Archfey gifted my character with a bow (Warlock-Hexblade).
My question is, since we will be starting at level 5, and theoretically going until level 20, what combination of levels should I start with, and take as we continue through the campaign? Seeing as DoMM is basically a huge dungeon crawl I want to be very combat viable. Should I even multi-class at all or just go all fighter or all warlock? For stats we do 4d6 drop lowest so my stats will probably be better than standard point buy, and feats are allowed.
It really depends on what you want to do. A Fighter and a Warlock are two completely different things, and both are valid options to prioritize. You won't be able to have both Arcane Archer features and Pact of the Blade without investing 3 levels in each class though, which isn't exactly ideal. Going 1 Fighter/X Warlock or 1 Warlock/X Fighter works better if you really want to multiclass.

Yeah that's kinda what I'm wrestling with. I envision the character as kind of a sniper who would hang out in the shadows and be able to dump a lot of resources into one or two devastating shots per combat, which I see energizing well with Elven Accuracy and Hexblades Curse to fish for crits, and then using Eldritch Smite, but then using Arcane Archer to supplement my damage/utility on rounds when I cant get advantage or my warlock abilities are spent, and of course its very flavorful for an elf to take Arcane Archer.
Here are my build Ideas
Arcane Archer 3/Hexblade X
At level 20 I would have:
4 ASIs
4 5th level spell slots
7 Invocations
All Mystic Arcanums
All Hexblade Features
Archery Fighting Style
Action Surge (one use)
Second Wind (1d10+3)
2 Arcane Shots (2 Uses)
Arcane Archer 7/Hexblade X
5 ASIs
3 5th level spell slots
6 Invocations
2 Mystic Arcanums
All Hexblade Features
Archery Fighting Style
Action Surge (One Use)
Second Wind (1d10+7)
Extra Attack
Magic Arrow and Curving Shot
3 Arcane Shots (2 Uses)
So I guess what I'm wondering is what build people think would be more fun/effective in combat, and what order to take levels in as the campaign progresses to ensure the build comes online quickly and doesn't have too many levels spent waiting for level ups.
So since you are starting at level 5 you'll have to delay one of the classes a little from the beginning. It sounds like you really like the idea of a warlock archer so you should definitely take 3 levels in warlock to be able to make the pact of the blade and take improved pact weapon invocation allowing you to make a bow your pact weapon. The other two levels you can use as either dipping more into warlock or getting those two levels in fighter as a start. From there I think as you play you'll get a better idea of which class' abilities will be more beneficial to your character. Keep in mind as a hexblade that charisma can be used for your attack rolls with your pact weapon. And as always make sure that you character's stats meet the multclassing requirements for both classes

I would start Fighter 2 for CON save proficiency, Action Surge, and Archery fighting style. The rest of the levels would go into Warlock.
