I just started playing and my adventure league group is about to begin our second campaign: Tyranny of Dragons. We will go from level 1 to 13, so capstone abilities are of no concern. I'll be playing a half-orc barbarian with Outlander background. I think I'd benefit from a dip into fighter, for more turns with action surge and some crit fishing with Champion's improved critical. That would make a (10 Barbarian/ 3 Fighter) character. Does this seem optimal?
When should I take the levels in Fighter? And should I dip 1,2, or 3 levels? I don't want to delay or sacrifice ASI's. Any advice on this build would be appreciated.
I'm looking at the Totem Warrior or Ancestral Guardian path depending on how my role in the party develops. If my team mates are extra squishy magical cannons then definitely Ancestral Guardian.
Well going for 10/3 will give you 2 ASI's. If you go 9/4 you'll get 3 ASI's. 12/1 will give 3 as well.
It really depends on whether you want the 10th level Path ability. For both Totem and Guardian they're Divination style spells you probably won't see a lot of use of. Because of that I would suggest 9 Barb / 4 Fighter. You'll still get the Brutal Critical from 9 in Barbarian.
I would probably go 8 Barbarian + 4 Fighter + 1 Barbarian. The Brutal Critical die is nice but it won't really be groundbreaking until you get your Champion crit-fisher benefit. You could go 8 Barbarian + 3 Fighter + 1 Barbarian + 1 Fighter. But that would delay your 3rd ASI for a level. It's really up to you and what you need at the time.
I would also go 9 Barb / 4 Fighter. However, I would go 6 Barb (especially if Ancestral Guardian), 4 Fighter, then finish in Barb because I'd want to get Champion online sooner rather than later.

Thanks. I think I will!
