I wanted to make a character that was an old retired general. Not so much a strong guy but a tactical one. I was thinking battle master and mastermind but I wanted to know if their were more options. Im thinking of someone in the back or in the middle lane to assist with some manuvering and reposition. Magic is cool but I kind of want it to not be a lot or I would just make a wizard with all their crowd control
Battlemaster and mastermind are the only two options that really emphasize being a tactician, but clerics and bards could function similarly if you choose a subclass like the War Domain or College of Valor, along with a suite of support spells like Bless.
Depending on what you consider a lot of magic, an Artificer could be a way to go. You're character could have retired from the battle field but worked on inventing new weapons of war. They are high INT characters with goes along with the idea of a tactician and can fill all kinds of roles in the part as needed. Armorer can give you some good options for controlling the field, but honestly both Battle Smith and Artillerist could play into that kind of idea. And Flash of Genius is basically made for brilliant tactical maneuvers to save the day.
Battle master can manipulate battlefield positioning, cause allies to strike, and slightly buff with temp hitpoints.
order domain cleric voice of authority can cause an ally to reaction attack if they cast a leveled spell affects them, especially bless since the 1d4 to attack applies immediately to that reaction attack.
bard college of glammer can bonus action spend a bard die to reposition many allies without opportunity attacks AND gives temporary hitpoints.
inspiring leader feat is mechanically effective and thematiy effective.
mastermind rogues bonus action help is quite potent on a dip.
telekenetic feat can be used to manipulate an ally or enemies positions as a bonus action.
there are probably more things now with tashas but I haven’t taken the time to look at those options entirely.

Hmmm, I never thought about a Tactician artificer, but that fits really well.

A fool pulls the leaves. A brute chops the trunk. A sage digs the roots.
I bet a rogue mastermind multiclassed with 3 to 5 levels of glamour bard would be cool. Especially if you went with a half elf/high elf for a blade cantrip, or a human/custom lineage for a feat.
Minor spellcasting and slots, bardic die to maneuver party members and buff them with temp hitpoints, or help them with checks, saves, heals, or spell damage.
mastermind for resourceless bonus action help that doesn’t interfere with your action casting of leveled spells or your blade cantrip. Sneak attack die means you won’t be left behind entirely by the offensive capabilities of your team.
imagine the high level feature of misdirection combined with your master of tactics. You may potentially use your help bonus action to give the next attack against an enemy creature next to you granting cover. If you are targeted by a creature from range that has to go around the “helped” creature then you may use your reaction to make that attack target the creature giving you cover. That enemies attack will be redirected to the creature granting you cover, and the attack will now be made with advantage. Simply wonderful for tactics.
