Id totally be down for them to get some dragon ball power. they have been weak for so long let them be a bit stronger ,dw fighter and wizard will still be king. but you know it would be sick if they got viable ki blasts did good dpr and could do stuff like blind on a reaction or something like that
it would be interesting to see a workable mechanism whereby the character begins glowing and shouting in the middle of a localized gust of wind, every round gaining a bigger MA die. at max for their level they emerge into a calm moment with Haste and a free single-use of Misty Step to join battle.
...if the fight isn't already long over.
Don’t forget that 5 minutes in DBZ can take 5 episodes, so over 100 mins. So all that yelling for a minute in the anime could actually only be 3 seconds or less. I wouldn’t want actual DBZ monks in the game. Something close to it in the in the game is Sun Soul Monk. They dropped the ball on the range of the radiant bolts, it should have been 60ft. The power of the 11th level feature needs to scale and let you spend more ki as you level. Maybe allowing you to spend up proficiency bonus Ki on it would make it better. Sun Shield should also add 1d4 radiant damage to all your attacks. Once that’s done it’s a good proxy for a Dragon Ball.

you don't have to play them, and I didn't say it shouldn't be balanced . just reeks of weird fun police attitude. db for example took ideas from journey to the west and superman . nothing wrong with getting inspiration to add more flavor . also sun soul sucked . i would agree if it actually had a little power but man that thing was a dud.
I'm curious why I'm not seeing Nets appear in more theory crafting. It is possible to make an effective Net throwing Monk. Granted, it is a bit off theme. For reflavoring, can anyone suggest another item that is more Monkish but works the same as a Net?
A Monks attacks can all be bludgeoning, which the Net is immune to. So there is not a risk of accidentally damaging your own Net. The Net's DC=8+PB+DEX uses DEX, so the Monk can be a bit less MAD. The Restrained condition is more significant than the Prone condition. The downsides are teammates unintentionally destroying your Nets and losing the damage from that Attack.
For building take Magic Initiate for the Mending Spell and take half a dozen Nets as equipment. As an Attack Action, throw a Net (or 2 with Extra Attack). Then use Bonus Action Unarmed Strike or Flurry of Blows with Advantage. Then retreat, taking an Opportunity Attack at Disadvantage. The target has to waste either an Action or an Attack to get out of the Net.

Ok I get it . you just don't understand how fantasy works . I'm not saying literal dragon ball, I'm saying they could use it as better source of inspiration to draw from in a land of make beleive. I will always side with the system that gives more options . you should stick to old 5e if that is the case since new subclass might step on your tone censoring. I detest that mind set, it lacks imagination and wants to control others . I'm sorry I like people to have varying fantasy options .
And most of us like varying fantasy options that don't include literally blowing up the world.
They understand fantasy just fine, and they're right that tone absolutely matters. Dragon Ball Z being a terrible place to draw inspiration from, if you're looking to maintain a cohesive world. It's also wrong to assume an anime from the 1980s is the inspiration for Way of the Sun Soul. Don't believe me? Take a look at the prestige class from 20 years ago. And at the Radiant Fist Paragon Path from 4E. What do they even have in common?
You can still have varying fantasy options while working within constraints. Believe it or not, constraints can actually lead to more creativity. People can be overwhelmed by the idea of limitless possibility, so putting a damper on that can be rather productive.

A game is a system of rules and limits, there has to be some control. Without it we are just standing around telling each other stories that don’t even match up in tone or theme. If you want to have Goku next to your medieval knight that’s cool for your story, but it will literally break the game. Also I like people having varying fantasy options as well. FATE handles superheroes pretty well and there are other systems that can handle DBZ characters. Honestly DnD system can handle it if you change the setting and a play with the numbers a bit.

The moment you have a wizard next to your medieval knight you've broken the game. If you're going to have wizards killing people with giant rocks from heaven you're no longer in the scope of a 'medieval knight', you're in the scope of Heracles redirecting major rivers to clean the Augean Stables.

I'm not writing my own narrative. In the manga and anime adaptation, they literally blow up multiple planets. Earth, believe it or not, is one of them. Even at the low end, the first Kame-Hame-Ha completely levels Mount Frying Pan. That happens in episode 8 of Dragon Ball. And the moon has been repeatedly destroyed.
So, if you're going to invoke something, know what you're invoking.
I won't speak for you, but we don't want Dragon Ball Z because the scale it operates at is insane; in no small part because its destructive capabilities dwarf the most powerful of full spellcasters. If you want to draw from anime as an inspiration, there's so many much more out there that doesn't include world-breaking. With that in mind, some good places to start would be Afro Samurai, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Street Fighter.
I don't lack imagination, and you don't need to resort to baseless insults. I want a consistent world, which is something I would think most players want.
I applaud your brainstorming. You threw something at the wall. It just didn't stick.

Spellcasters are already demigods, you either have to gut spellcasting or elevate everyone else.
Gut spellcasting. Nobody plays at demi-god levels anyways, so bring everyone down to a reasonable power level and maybe, just maybe, DMs will run games up to those levels.

Even if you mechanically weaken them the fact is they are still summoning rocks or fire or whatever to hurt people. The idea of the mundane man next to that is silly.

So everyone's a demigod?
A fighter can beat a 50 ton armored lizard to death with a stick. They are demi gods, people just seem to get upset when its obvious instead of hidden behind numbers.

when he was little goku fought dinosaurs with a staff or bare handed, so this all tracks and circles cleanly back to monk. nice.

Wizards and Knights have appeared next to each other in fantasy for a long time. To call them mundane is not really fair. They are peak human, sometimes crossing into superhuman.

So kid Goku was at least able to solo CR8 Dinosaurs without much trouble. Some of that comes from the fact he is a broken race/species by Dnd standards that might have something to do with it, but he was probably at least a lvl15 monk. This is a child before DBZ. By the first battle of DBZ he was well into epic level play. What’s funny is Mr. Satan might be stronger than a lvl20 dnd character and he is suppose to represent the peak mundane of DBZ.
Id totally be down for them to get some dragon ball power. they have been weak for so long let them be a bit stronger ,dw fighter and wizard will still be king. but you know it would be sick if they got viable ki blasts did good dpr and could do stuff like blind on a reaction or something like that
it would be interesting to see a workable mechanism whereby the character begins glowing and shouting in the middle of a localized gust of wind, every round gaining a bigger MA die. at max for their level they emerge into a calm moment with Haste and a free single-use of Misty Step to join battle.

dnd isn't just a medieval fantasy game anymore. DMs can limit its scope if they want, but you got bird people, Technomagic kingdoms, planar battles, walking with gods, Airships, teleporters, original cultures, elf space, psychics, cthonics. It draws on whatever it wants really.

So everyone's a demigod?
Spellcasters are already demigods, you either have to gut spellcasting or elevate everyone else.
A wizard can time stop and summon rocks from the sky use bale fire ,clone himself .but a ki blast breaks your immersion Lol.
Gut spellcasting. Nobody plays at demi-god levels anyways, so bring everyone down to a reasonable power level and maybe, just maybe, DMs will run games up to those levels.
So Merlin and King Author aren’t from the same fantasy setting? I just leaned something new.
Even if you mechanically weaken them the fact is they are still summoning rocks or fire or whatever to hurt people. The idea of the mundane man next to that is silly.
A fighter can beat a 50 ton armored lizard to death with a stick. They are demi gods, people just seem to get upset when its obvious instead of hidden behind numbers.
when he was little goku fought dinosaurs with a staff or bare handed, so this all tracks and circles cleanly back to monk. nice.
unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: provide feedback!
Satan might be stronger than a lvl20 dnd character and he is suppose to represent the peak mundane of DBZ.
dnd isn't just a medieval fantasy game anymore. DMs can limit its scope if they want, but you got bird people, Technomagic kingdoms, planar battles, walking with gods, Airships, teleporters, original cultures, elf space, psychics, cthonics. It draws on whatever it wants really.
