If I’m using spike growth and a creature starts flying I should probably use ensnaring strike to bring them back down. I don’t want them to get away from my melee party members. It’s a group game. Yes, yes it is. Heavily obscured is you can't be seen, it is total darkness, it is being invisible, fog so deep you can't see more than 5 feet etc. 3/4th cover means you duck a little bit and you can't be seen. That isn't a trained ninjas stealthiness, that is just a fat dude standing around who you happen to miss when looking around for them.
Look look after years of training I can hide when I'm totally invisible guys.
Heavily obscured doesn't mean you're undetectable or "entirely hidden", it just means you can't be seen. Other senses exist. If you're heavily obscured and start singing loudly, not only will enemies know you're there, they have a good chance of knowing what square you're in.
You aren't refuting my point in the slightest. Most players aren't walking around with a trombone playing, so those other senses would drop off really quick. And no, past 20 paces even if a person is singing loudly you would not know where they are exactly. Somewhere over that way to my left sure, that square, hell no.
Being unheard isn't a default state - you have to try to be quiet, i.e. roll a Stealth check. Thus there is counterplay. The rule is fine.

Literally 2014 guidance is better because it’s a cantrip you can spam, they didn’t even think to remove concentration? Of course they removed most of the exploration flavour and abilities.

It doesn't remove concentration. It just means you can't have your concentration on HM broken by taking damage. You still have to concentrate.
