I could see it being part of the expanded campaign tools, as it is an NPC. However, this is a NPC follower/henchman that is always/often with the party to be considered part of it.
Consider this, a new class of "Sidekick". With sub-classes for each of the different types. GM's can create and add new characters to the campaign so that everyone can see their sheet and, if needed, play as them. Or perhaps there is a very young child in the group who wants their own character... but tends to wander off and someone else has to keep track of them. Sidekick rules to the rescue.
Basically, a near-empty class where everything important is in the sub-class.
but how do u recalculate CR? it mentions that u could basically, with dm approval, use a creature who's CR is above the normal cap at the start of the sidekick rules, and it dose lot even list the formula to do so, nor is there any such info clearly pointing out how to say change a CR 7 to a CR 1 in the dmg, and I can't seem to find such a formula online anywhere, plz dose anyone know how to recalculate CR?
I think for this all we really need is a sidekick class added with a subclass choice at level one to take warrior, expert and spellcaster then just make a custom race for the NPC you have turned into your sidekick with anything extra they get.
I've got a couple questions about the sidekick classes. Basically, my 6 year old wants to play a pixie and roll some dice, because she watched me playing with some friends, and I want to stick as close to RAW as possible.
1. Does innate spellcasting count as spellcasting, when it says to replace the creature's spellcasting feature with the feature in the spellcaster class's description? I assume no, but it's better to ask. I assume that it would be treated like, for example, "drow magic" in the drow pc race's features, where one is a racial feature and the other is a class feature.
2. Would a pearl count as an arcane focus? It's pretty similar to a crystal, and arguably an orb, and a pixie could probably wear a single pearl around its neck, and could easily touch it with a free hand when casting a spell (or just carry it around).
1. I would say "spellcasting" would refer to casting with slots, like in the "Apprentice Wizard " stat block. I would remove polymorph and possibly confusion from the pixie, though. If she really likes the idea of shapechanging pixie, though, maybe limit polymorph to 1 CR (still get dogs, cats, wolves, ponies).
2. I would have no problem with a pearl counting as an arcane focus. It meets the "or some similar item" for a crystal, and for pixie size, an orb.
For the most part, she would probably just be rolling dice and doing the math with my help, but any shenanigans wouldn't be too hard to deal with, and it's obviously meant to be fun anyway.
That being said, I'm also thinking about having her be a sprite with druid magic, because it fits a little more closely, the idea of a spellcaster with more spells isn't as interesting to me personally, and she mostly just wants to play a pink fairy.
Considering how the newest "summon" of the Artificer interacts, it should not be impossible to implement in a similar vein. The hit points are even tied to the class level, as such having increasing cr is not out of the question.
They don't say if they're going to implement material until said material is published. For example, it can be assumed the Of Ships and the Sea UA is what lead to Ghosts of Saltmarsh, but WotC hasn't declared "This is now part of GoS". That's just not how they roll.
Sidekicks really reminds me of back in the days of 1st edition and Henchmen and I like it for the nostalgia of it, but for sure it will not be for everyone. I mean it adds up to more paperwork for the DM and/or the Player. I can really see it as a fun way to maybe have a 2nd Character in a campaign, like maybe your a Wizard that hired a Rogue or a Warrior for infiltration or bodyguard duties you become friends and then while the main character is doing something that takes time the sidekick goes out on an adventure.
Dont see any way as a DM I'd allow anyone within a group of 7 to have a sidekick. Whats the need? Its a HUGE party. Im thinking these are really for small games with one or two players, not seven.
I saw under extras on my character sheet there is now a sidekick option but nothing to select on there when sorting by sidekick rules. So does this mean adding Sidekicks is officially being worked on?
I so hope you can do this. My group just adopted a goblin they found looting their boat. Much to my surprise.
Any update on the implementation of the system?

Thanks for the input.

Seriously, dose anyone know the formula or what ever on how to modify a larger than cr 1 creature to being cr 1 or lower?
Just reskin it to something that is cr 1
-_-
that aint really the answer looking for as the sidekick implies that reskining something is not the same as recalculating the cr
I wish we had a comment on whether they are intending to implement this material still, or not.

Most groups don't get to seven players

It does look like it is getting some attention. They do reference specific language from the UA. We can hope.
