I have a few gripes about the base class, namely that level 1 messes with multiclass spellcasting
How so?
Due to multiclass spellcasting rules a level 5 paladin or ranger can know/prepare level 2 spells, but if they multiclass 1 level artificer, they lose their level 2 slots.
No, they don't. I do see that on DDB it is happening, but that 100% has to be a bug (it IS still test material). Multi-classing never causes you to actually lose features from your other classes.
I think that's a calculation bug - as they are both half casters, should be adding the levels together and halving them (rounded down)
If you haven't already, this needs to be raised in the bug forums.

I was ignoring this because it was pointed out to be off topic, but just to close everything up:
It is not a bug. It is correct spell slot calculation acording to RAW (Half level rounded down), and mods said as much when it was brought up in the bug thread.
While it is 100% RAW, it is very likely not RAI, and needs to be addressed in next artificer update. Personally, my fix would be for the artificer to get cantrips and infusions at level 1, then leveled spell casting at level 2.
But this is all off topic, so don't reply to this comment, either of you.
I must say I will be pretty disappointed if today isn't the release day for the new UA. If not I'll probably just find a homebrew subclass and use that.

What makes you think it'll necessarily be Artificer subclasses? Unless there was some news I missed.

i like linguistics and, well, d&d, obviously. this bio hadn't been updated for 3 years so i figured i'd do that.

Actually stated on the UA release page that the next UA will have more Artificer info, but that may mean just more spells but hopefully more subclasses due to the length of time between releases.

I believe they said it will "likely" or "probably" or some such, be Artificer related.

I thought that had been indicated at the last UA release. Maybe it was just wishful thinking.
