Just as the title says, I am new to this...kind of. Back in high school I had a group of friends who we played I think 2 games with, but those where kinda messing around and didn't have any real structure. It was fun, but I want to build a character for an actual game.
Now I know that there is a lot going on and that there really isn't one way too play D&D, that kinda the beauty of this game. Even so I wanted to ask for help, cause of what kinda of character I would like to build up to. What has brought me back around into wanting to give this game another shot, is the Artificer class. This class just sounds fun to play and build around, but with little to no experience with playing let alone making a character.
So with all that said and done, my main question and what I would really like help with is what standard class should I start off as, to help me get ready for making an Artificer character? I was trying to just start off with making one, but I was getting a bit lost and confused, and now I am here asking for help lol.
Sorry for what I assume is poorly worded and maybe a bit contrived message, the last time I posted in a forum was back in middle school in I think 2008 lol. Don't tend to do this all that often.
Thank you for reading and looking forward to reading your replies. X3
Hi TheLagFairy! Welcome to the forums and welcome back to D&D!
While I am no expert in the Artificer class (still sadly only a playtest class), I am not sure there is any other base class that can help you get "ready" for rolling one.
Maybe hybrid classes like the Ranger or the Paladin, gaining access to spells roughly at the same level as the Artificer and with a similar list, might help you get used to using spells in conjunction with other features, but the Artificer is an INT-based spellcaster, so you would have different stats and skill you would want to focus on. A closer fit in that sense could be an INT focused Arcane Trickster Rogue, but that would be a quite different character in terms of spell list and general approach to situations...
I think you could try rolling an Artificer straight away, as he doesn't really look more complicated than any other base class, and the progression proposed in the playtest material is smooth enough, much like the other base classes.
This is just my opinion though, and I am not sure how useful it might be for you XD
Welcome! Some questions to help us help you better:
-Do you have a Dm already? What are their rules about character creation? (e.g. do they allow feats? Are there race or class restrictions?)
-Assuming you are talking about the Unearthed Arcana Artificer, which specialty appeals to you, the alchemist or the gunsmith?
-If you are talking about a 3rd party artificer class, which one?
As a general rule, it's usually best (although by no means required) for new players to start with one of the "base" classes (fighter, wizard, rogue, cleric) and one of the "base" races (dwarf, elf, half-elf, half-orc, halfling, elf). I run a drop-in table on a weekly basis, and new-to 5e players are required to start with a character restricted to a similar list (I do allow paladins and rangers for new players). After a few sessions (with my group the rule is 3) you should have enough experience to branch out to something more complicated.

Hello and Welcome!
I don't know anything about Artificer, but the folks in this thread do...https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/unearthed-arcana/8649-artificer-has-been-removed-from-dms-guild
Somebody there could probably steer you in the right direction.
Good Luck
Perpetually annoyed that Eldritch Knights can't use Eldritch Blast, Eldritch Smite, and Eldritch Sight.
