One particular discord server you might want to look into is The Forged Concordance (aka TFC). They are a "west marches" style play space, meaning there are lots of DMs in a shared world. DMs offer games, players join lists for the game, and the DM chooses a list to play. It is a very structure server, with a lot of rules and expectations, but most of those rules are designed to provide a safe and level playing field. I have found it to be a very welcoming place for folks new to Discord and Roll 20 (the Virtual Table Top service they use). My impression is they are also very welcoming to those completely new to the game, but since I had played for years before joining, that's harder for me to say from personal experience
Roll20 is a Virtual Table Top (VTT), commonly used for playing online. There is a search option to find games based on the day/frequency that suits you.
Online play usually uses one tool for communication (Discord/Zoom), and another for the game. Some groups use VTTs for maps and tokens in conjunction with DnD Beyond. Others prefer the theatre of the mind.
Folks, I'm an absolute beginner looking to play the game, give it a try. I'm familiar with the game, but that's about all.
How do I find a game? Are people playing using Zoom? How do I get started?
Thank you!
Try the Looking For Group forum. Google Discord servers for D&D. And depending on covid measures, don't discount playing face to face - google "D&D [insert your general location here], look for Adventurers League options near you, check out local game stores.
Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
