Hey all. So Thranduil from The Hobbit series is probably my favourite Middle Earth character and it’s inspiring me to make a wood elf because of it.
So I’m wanting to take some inspiration from Thranduil, who seems to be a magic user mixed with his combat abilities. So do you guys think that an Eldritch Knight or Arcane Archer would be fitting enough?
Would either of those subclass types fit the lore of a wood elf in D&D too?
First, where do you see Thranduil performing actual magic? I don't recall this from the films but I might have missed it.
What I do recall is his very elegant dual-wielding during the battle of the five armies. There are many cool mechanics for this, e.g. the two-weapon-fighting style from the fighter (or ranger) class and the dual wielder feat.
Second, the elk he's riding into battle could be accomplished by the cavalier fighter subclass. There's even the giant elk stat block.
Third. If you do want to have him use magic, I wouldn't recommend the eldritch knight or arcane archer subclasses. I'd rather have him multiclass into druid or sorcerer to implement his innate elvish nature-connected magic.
Hope I could have and much fun with experimenting on creative builds like this :)
I personally think Thranduil would be a battlemaster fighter. He doesn't use magic other then to conceal his fire-blasted face, so I think he might have just multiclassed into wizard or sorcerer for a level or 2. I think a level 12 Battlemaster/2nd level wizard would probably be the best Thranduil build. For his skills, I'd say take your pick from Persuasion, Deception, Insight, Nature, Arcana, History, Acrobatics, Survival and Perception, as they would be ones Thranduil definitely has. Get the Dual Wielder feat, Two-Weapon fighting style, and his abilities should be something like STR 15, DEX 20, CON 16, INT 18, WIS 17, and CHA 18. His manuevers might be Riposte, Parry, Sweeping attack, Feinting attack, Evasive footwrok, Goading attack, and Trip attack. For his wizard stuff, he'd have some illusion magic, and no offensive stuff like buring hands and ray of frost; he doesn't need magic to hurt people, he's already got his swords for that.

Hey Carl!
