Hi guys, my first post. Our campaign is due to restart in a month or so after a long hiatus. We've been using MBMP's character sheets, but since they've been hamstrung I was wondering what you'd recommend.
Well, since a character generator/manager is part of the DDB (DnDBeyond) package, most of us would recommend using DDB's tools. If you want to create online and print out a character sheet for use at the table, you should be aware that the current pdf export is far from perfect. A revamp of the character sheet and the pdf export is in the works, but there's no clear word on when it will be released. But you can manage your characters online at the table on a phone, tablet, or laptop, as well, and that works pretty well.
The only licensed digital products for DnD 5e I know of are DDB, Roll 20, and Fantasy Grounds. Anything else that offers D&D content that's not in the SRD (System Reference Document) is violating copyright law and will in all likelihood get a C&D from Wizards of the Coast and have to shut down or at least remove non SRD content (as MBMP did, along with a long list of others)
I'd encourage you to try the tools here (SRD, Basic Rules, and EEPC are free) and potentially at Rolll 20 and Fantasy Grounds, and see if you think they would work for you. Keep in mind that if what you primarily want is a character sheet you don't have to buy entire "books"; you can buy individual elements (Like the Storm Herald Barbarian subclass) or bundles of elements (all the races) for far less than the whole "book", and those purchases reduce the cost of the entire book (or bundle) if you decide to purchase later.
It's not finished yet, but I'm working on a buyers guide to DDB for folks who are considering purchasing content and/or subscriptions here at DDB. You can find it here
