I was trying to add a custom sidekick to a character is this something you have to buy? Also is there a way to level them up or do you just have to make notes of everything? Just wondered because when I clicked it there was nothing there when the filter by sidekick rules was checked.
Correct. Each level is coded as a different creature.
Ugh annoying but ok. I hope they change that eventually.
They would have to reprogram the extras tab (in more ways than 1) to do it differently. It might happen someday, but I'm sure it is far from a priority right now.

What Adam has said in the developer's updates is that if WOTC ever develops an official (i.e. not UA) and full-fledged system (i.e. through level 20) for sidekicks, they will develop a more robust sidekick system. [DOIP sidekicks are official, but not full-fledged] My impression was that they determined that the amount of work to develop it wasn't worth it if the system was limited to DOIP, given all the other features they want to add. I understand that it is frustrating. I'd much rather have a leveling system for sidekicks that the current statblocks, too. I try to remind myself that I don't see the "whole picture" the way they do, and that putting attention and resources toward one desired feature comes at the cost of other desired features being delayed or not happening.

That’s a fair assessment. Let’s hope that they make that system official someday then.
Seems to be progressing that way! Today we have official content defining the sidekicks up to level 12
Dragon of Icespire Peak: Lvl 1-6
Storm Lord's Wrath: Lvl 7-9
Sleeping Dragon's Wake: Lvl 9-11
Divine Contention: Lvl 11-12
I'm not sure that Storm Lord's Wrath, Sleeping Dragon's Wake and Divine Contention are "official content." They are each written by one author (unusual for official content), they are available only here, not in print, they don't appear to show up on WOTC's website. I could be wrong, so it would be nice to have some clarity from staff about that.
We can’t yet create them per Tasha’s rules. THey need to create a new system to do that, which they plan to do. I believe that the sidekick system is one of the pieces of Tasha’s they saw for the first time less than 3 weeks ago.
For what it's worth, what I've been doing is creating Homebrew Monsters by copying the statblock and then editing it to have the sidekick abilities out of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. Not perfect but it works for now until Dev comes out with an actual Sidekick builder.

Do you use the encounter builder to run encounters? I can't figure out how to integrate sidekicks into that other than to add them as monsters which throws off difficulty calculations and makes control of the creatures complicated for an online session. I would also like these integrated into Avrae/Discord for some of the other games. I have tried a few options - one of which is to create characters at the campaign level and have players take control of them so they can run them - but that means using standard classes which isn't what I want.

Hi @Vanya_42nd
I do use the Encounter Builder quite a bit but I don't put the Sidekicks in it as the Player can control their own Sidekick. Add the Sidekick to the Player's Character Sheet under the Extras tab and then the player can control the Sidekick on their own.

First you need to own the essentials kit (or the sidekicks within) or have it shared to your character on DDB.
Then you just go to extras - manage extras - add an extra - sidekick and choose the sidekick at what level you want it.
When creating homebrew sidekicks you will have to create multiple versions for each level.
I was trying to do this the other day as well. Where is the "extras" menu found exactly?
On the character sheet.
Ah ok so I can’t just use a creature and level it I guess?

After Tasha's book,
Are we able to create Sidekicks on Beyond?
im really waiting for this feature

Had to find this out in another form but I found it. Ty.
